Paul Schimmel, the former chief curator of MOCA, oversees this giant 100,000 square foot space. You think of galleries as being stuffy, but this one is very inviting. They show high-end art but in a low-key way. I saw a mom playing with her baby just on the floor next to these amazing paintings; I find that kind of atmosphere makes the art more accessible. They have a restaurant with a chef who used to work at Soho House, in Venice Beach, and they’re using a garden off the courtyard to grow their own vegetables. You’ll see a chicken coop there, too, for fresh eggs.
Tips van locals
If you're venturing downtown, this is the big contemporary gallery to visit. From there, you can find more in the ever expanding Downtown L.A. Arts District. Two other area to find art galleries are: Culver City and Bergamot Station.
