Grand Lake is a beautiful theater in a 1926 building with a marquee. The projector and the sound quality are really incredible. Every time I see a move here, it looks so good and sounds amazing. This part of Oakland is so beautiful. You can take a stroll around Lake Merritt before the movie, and go grab some food nearby.

Oakland's historic movie palace is the only place we see films. Blockbusters, classics on 70mm, Q/A with local filmmakers; they've got it all. If you're lucky, you may get a performance on the historic pipe organ before your film starts.

We're spoiled for historic indie theaters here. An Oakland institution & THE place to see a big movie (or any other first-run film) opening weekend. In the main auditorium on Friday & Saturday evenings, you'll also enjoy live Mighty Wurlitzer Organ playing (on a keyboard that magically rises out of, then sinks below, the stage) pre-show!
