The first Cistercian monastery in Ireland founded in 1142 by St Malachy of Armagh, its most unusual feature is the octagonal Lavabo c. 1200.

Mellifont Abbey is a ruined 12th-century Cistercian monastery . Most of what remains is only foundations, but there is a fine lavabo that is mostly intact, along with the gate house. Walk there.
