Singapore’s Church of Our Lady of Lourdes is an impressive neo-Gothic Catholic Church, which is modelled on the Lourdes (France) church with the same name. Inside the Church is a grotto (cave) with statues of Our Lady appearing to Saint Bernadette. Opened in 1888, Church of Our Lady of Lourdes is the first Tamil Catholic church in Singapore. It bears a resemblance to “San Thome Basilica” in Chennai, which was also built around the same time (1893). After visiting this church, I understood the magnificence of Gothic architecture, to allow light into the building as there was no electric lighting then.
