Parks & Nature

Monte Pedroso, in the west, is the city´s most emblematic hill. Protected for years from construction so that no building can ever rival the Apostle´s Basilica in height or visibility, it is the viewpoint par excellence to discover the city blending into the scenery and the Cathedral facing the sunset. Although this place is worth visiting at any time of day, the evening is special since that is when the Cathedral reflects the day´s last rays of sunshine. From the city, Monte Pedroso´s summit is a 40-minute walk away. You set out from Ponte Asén, in Galeras Park, and go through the village of Casa Novas, thereafter going up the path marked by the Way of the Cross.

The Alameda park is the most important reference point as regards Santiago residents´ walks and leisure; it is a very pleasant area, a kind of natural lounge. Its privileged location, bordering part of the old town, with a magnificent perspective of its west façade (the most monumental one), makes it the city´s main garden. It also stands out because of the variety and size of its trees and ornamental species, such as its oak grove (`carballeira´ in Galician), magnificent eucalyptus trees or the pergola with views formed by the horse chestnuts in Paseo da Ferradura.

The park is accessed via the strategic passageway formed by the contrasting architectures of two museums: the Galician Contemporary Art Centre (CGAC), a modern building also designed by Siza, and the Museo do Pobo Galego (Museum of the Galician People), housed in the former medieval convent. Situated on a west-facing hillside, the park offers surprising views of the city's rooftops, to which Chillida dedicated a sculpture that intentionally frames a vision of the city. Technical data: Duration of park tour: 20 minutes Topography: steep slope Open (October-March): 8 am- 8 pm (April-September): 8 am-11 pm Special botanical interest Special monumental interest

The park follows the Belvís watercourse, an elongated area make up of several meadows watered by a small stream. The walls, terraces and historical paths, such as the picturesque lane called As Trompas, have been respected in this park's project. This green space both separates and links the historical quarter and the large buildings of the Convent of Belvís and the Minor Seminary, forming a kind of natural 'moat' bordering the medieval town. Its highest part provides singular views of the entire city. Technical data: Extension: 30.604 m2 Duration of park tour: 20 minutes Topography: steep slope Open: 24 hours Special monumental interest Viewpoint / good views Extensive shandy areas

Sarela River Walkway This walkway is per se a world of its own, completely separate from the city; it runs through woodland and suggests excursion, adventure, discovery and direct contact with nature. It follows the small river Sarela and reveals the historical importance of such watercourses as regards shaping the landscape: bridges, irrigation ditches, channels, waterwheels, tanneries... Such tanneries played an important role in the city's economic development from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century, as we can see throughout this route that begins at the Ponte Sarela tannery and ends at the Carme de Abaixo tannery, which has now been converted into a housing complex.

Vista Alegre Park was once a private garden, as shown by its sturdy outer wall, the statues guarding the way, its trees (palm trees, orange trees, apple trees, camellias, monkey puzzle trees, etc, some of which are more than a hundred years old), its pavilion and other shady corners in which to sit and rest. The School of High Musical Studies, designed by Antón García Abril and completed in 2001, is a giant cube of large, rough pieces of granite; its design was greatly influenced by the music school´s acoustic requirements. The huge mass of stone is set in landscaped grounds, almost without touching them, giving the impression that it is floating on top of the gently rolling landscape.

Open since 1993, and holding a stable programme since 1995, the Galician Centre of Contemporary Art is located in the limits of the Old Town in Santiago de Compostela, within a space considered magic by Galician people. With its activities CGAC aims to point out at the artistic guidelines of the last few decades. The Center has held retrospective shows of internationally acclaimed artists. The Centre aims at becoming, first and foremost, an active space. Therefore, lecture series, artist workshops, open discussion between artists and critics, a video platform programme, are part of its daily practice, and so does the information about our activities available on the Internet (www.cgac.org).
