Food Scene

This bakery offers many gluten free options! The banana loaf is pretty yum! Hint: the gluten free baking is done on Mondays and the bakery take orders prior to Mondays. There may still be some GF banana loaf slices available if you forget to order in advance but i'ts not likely as I am quick to eat them all....

Parks & Nature

SWIMMING! A 5 min drive or a short walk from the Gordonvale township is the Mulgrave river. You can follow the tracks along to find your own quiet spot or mingle in with locals at the main river front. **Please note the signs when you are planning on swimming anywhere in the tropics - we do have crocodiles here and they ARE in parts of the Mulgrave river. If in doubt ask a local for advice.

This is my favourite gorge and much of my life has been spent here! Behana Gorge is located in Wooroonooran National Park (so no dogs allowed!). Its 10 minute drive south from Gordonvale. You can take a left track and swim in the mostly shallow bottom river or do yourself a favour and walk uphill for 4o-45 mins to the top waterfall and pools. STUNNING! This is also the Cairns water supply so you will be following a water pipe along the road up. (No cars can access the road up). There are several spots on the way up where you can detour and find secret spots and more private pools and falls. Like all the bodies of water in this region please be sensible with currents, rapids & boulders underwater! Also note...the water is pretty freezing up there!

Arts & Culture

Little bit of the history of the region..... Taken from their website: Head towards the sugar mill in Gordonvale, across the train and cane crossing you will find the carpark on the left hand side. This building was purpose-built to house objects used by settlers in the area then called Nelson in the late 1800s. The aboriginal, miners' and timber cutters' displays are realistically set against a 40 metre rainforestbackdrop. There is a fully equipped blacksmith's workshop. Furniture and homemakers' aides in the pioneer woman's domain demonstrate the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the era, plus a few luxuries. Boats and pack horses brought supplies through Packers Camp to the goldfields, and artifacts hold many memories. Documents recording lives of early settlers are a useful resource for genealogy research. School children can engage with their local history, see some of the tools their grandparents actually used and learn of the impact on the community of the 503rd Parachute Regiment based there during World War Two. A hand-crafted Chinese Joss is in safe keeping along with memorabilia from prominent local citizens.
