The Oregon Zoo is a fun place to take the family. See animals from the PNW and you must check out the world class elephant exhibit. The kids will also enjoy the train ride, which has an extra cost. If you're lucky you might even find tickets to a band playing at the zoo that you've been meaning to see. Parking is easy, but even easier is to skip driving all together by taking the Max Orange Line to Pioneer Square and then transfer to the Max Red Line which stops at the zoo. More info at TriMet.org but trust us, it's easy peasey!

Mt Hood offers awesome recreation opportunities year-round. Skiing options include Mt. Hood Meadows, Timberline, and Ski Bowl. You can even spring and summer ski at Timberline on Palmer Glacier. Or put the ski poles down, and lace up your hiking shoes to explore places like Ramona Falls, McNeil Point, and Lost Lake. Or get really ambitious and section hike part of the Pacific Crest Trail or hike all-the-way around Mt. Hood on the Timberline Trail (~40 miles). I've done it and, trust me, it's totally worth it!

Take a day trip to Mt. St. Helens to get the chance to stare into the crater of an active volcano. When Mt. St. Helens errupted in 1980, it rained ash in Portland. You can learn about the erruption at the visitor center and see a landscape as it comes back to life.

Everything is literally coming up roses in Portland's International Rose Test Garden. June and July are when the scent of roses fills the air and epic views of the both the city and Mt. The Columbia River Gorge has some of the most awe inspiring sights in the entire Pacific Northwest and Beacon Rock is definitely one of the coolest. This ancient, basalt monolith was once part of the core of a volcano that eroded away. There's a fun trail with cat-walks that will take up Beacon Rock and from the top you can see why early settlers used this landmark as a beacon to help navigate down the Columbia River.

Astoria is another of our favorite places to go on the north coast. At just about 2 hours away, Astoria is a fun place to watch huge ocean freighters come and go while wandering the store fronts or eating lunch with a local brew at Fort George Brewery or Buoy. The Astoria Column offers some of the best sights of the city and the murals are cool too. Other fun places to check out are the trolley, the Oregon Film Museum (did you know both Goonies and Kindergarten Cop were shot in Astoria!), or to head over to Fort Clatsop National Memorial to get a sense of what Lewis and Clark experienced in the winter of 1805-1806.

Long before Portland or Oregon were even a thing, Fort Vancouver stood on the north side of the Columbia River as the headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company's Columbia Department. The 19th century fort was a major center of the regional fur trading with local tribes and trappers, and is a really fun place to visit to learn about local history. If it's open when you visit, take the kids to the blacksmith shop--you won't regret it.

Neighborhoods

Over 100 years ago, Sellwood was once its own little city before becoming part of Portland. Walk down 13th Avenue and check out old buildings, antique stores, boutiques, and a bunch of our favorite restaurants, like Ginos, Sellwood Bottle Shop, Jade Bistro, and more. Take a walk over to Sellwood Park, the Old Chuch, and let the dog play at the Willamette River. Kids will have fun at the Westmoreland Nature Play park or you can really treat them with amusement park rides and roller skating at Oaks Park. Sellwood is a very short 5 minute drive from our house, a 10 minute bike ride, or 25 minute walk.

Woodstock is a charming SE Portland neighborhood whose 'main street' once had a trolley run down the center of it. Shop for organic food at New Seasons Grocery, get some of the best ice cream in SE at Cloud City (seriously, avoid the lines at Salt and Straw and go here!), and eat at places like Double Mountain Brewery and the Delta Lounge. Grab a hot dog from Ottos Sausage Kitchen and Meat Market, which has been in the neighborhood for almost 100 years and has been featured by Guy Fieri's show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on the the Food Network. There's a great playground at Woodstock Park for kids. Woodstock is only a short 5 minute drive from our house, can be very conveniently reached by the #75 bus, and be biked to in about 20 minutes.

World class wine

In under 1 hour you can drive to Dundee, Oregon to sip on world renowned wine. Dundee is where pioneering wine makers put Oregon Pinot Noir on the world stage. We've enjoyed great wine and family friendly vibes at places like Stoller Family Estate, Sokol Blosser Winery, and Four Graces. Grab a bite at Red Hills Market and picnic at your favorite winery -- cheers!
