Shopping and Food scene

Love or loathe retail therapy, there is no denying that the Westfield Shopping Centre in Shepherd’s Bush (the largest shopping centre in Europe) is a mecca for shopping. All the usual chains can be found here, plus a luxury shopping village area for the likes of Gucci and Armani. The food options here are also ample with a dedicated food court plus several bars and restaurants lining the outside perimeter. Make a day of buying here if that is your (shopping) bag or just duck in to escape the rain or inclement weather – it can get mega busy in here so if you want to avoid crowds, best to go early or late to avoid the peak retail rush.

Borough Market is London’s oldest, largest and most established food market. The many stalls are adorned with an abundance of fresh fruit, vegetables, meats and cheeses brought to you by passionate artisan producers from across the UK. There’s also a huge choice of street food vendors selling ready to eat lunches or if you prefer, sit down in its many great restaurants. Borough Market is steeped in history and dates back all the way to 1276. I t’s also been the filming location for Harry Potter and Bridget Jones’s Diary. Borough is probably the most tourist-heavy market out of them all and Saturday’s get SUPER busy. Go as early as you possibly can. Info at: www.boroughmarket.org.uk

You can’t visit London and not have fish and chips. Its a national dish! Poppies is a really fun place to enjoy this British staple. Stepping inside the restaurant it feels like you’ve been transported back in time to the 1950’s with its retro décor and vintage jukebox. In addition to fish and chips at Poppies, you can also try other British ‘fish supper staples’ like mince meat pies, fish cakes, battered sausages and if you’re brave enough you can even get jellied eels which are an East End delicacy dating back to the 18th century. info at: www.poppiesfishandchips.co.uk/locations/soho/

The pies are a little thin on the ground, but it is a real island. The little Twickenham mudflat has 26 artists’ studios on it, and can only be reached by a cute footbridge that arches over the Thames. You’ll find a jarring ‘private property’ sign when you reach the other side but, twice a year, the islanders invite the public to come and nose around for its Open Studios event. It was once a bubbling cauldron of British rock ’n’ roll. There was a five-month period in 1963 where you could see the Rolling Stones play there every Wednesday. The Who, Pink Floyd and Screaming Lord Sutch all did gigs at the Eel Pie Island Hotel, a rickety nineteenth-century ballroom that was lost to a fire in 1971. It was a place for counter-culturalists, poets and a pretty sizeable hippie commune because… well, it was the ’60s. Today Eel Pie’s community is made up of painters, potters and sculptors beavering away in studios built around an old boatyard. But it’s not some bougie paradise, it’s still a strange, overgrown hamlet – the public path to the studios is scattered with undressed mannequin torsos, thick curls of boating rope, rusty hulls and plants wearing top hats
