Neighborhoods

In the last 20 years, La Floresta has developed a reputation for being one of the most beguiling neighborhoods of any city in South America. Things are done different here, but it’s no surprise since it’s full of local and foreign artists. It has great diverse selections of cafes and bars and if you want to catch a movie check out Ocho y Medio Theater.

Guapulo is the bohemian neighborhood of Quito; a small town apart from the big city. Due to its location, near the Machangara river, this neighborhood is surprisingly quiet despite its many "hippie" cafes. If you want to take a stroll around it, we recommend visiting the old colonial church and its famous "mirador de Guapulo", which will expose you to the beauty of this artistic town. Oh and if you are looking to relax in open space, they Guapulo park is a hidden gem where you and your loved ones will enjoy a relaxing time.

Finally an authentic ramen in Quito, Ecuador. They deliver on the flavors and the experience, with only one exception - you won’t have to take your shoes off. The Tonkatsu Rame is my favorite. It has a pork base broth which gives it a snotty comforting taste to whatever else they throw in there; add a little garlic oil and it will make all the flavors pop.

When you think of bread in Quito, Corfú is top of mind. It is a staple of Quito which many Ecuadorians from other provinces have on their must-eat checklist when visiting the capital. They are famous for their seasonal “guaguas de pan” and “colada morada.” If you love bread, you must visit this place. P.S. there are several locations, beyond this one, including one that is block away from the suite on the 6 de diciembre Ave.

The name means "Tribute" and this restaurant does exactly this to the ecuadorian cuisine. Their star is the ecuadorian beef, transforming it from something common into a high quality product. This restaurant will change your mind on what a good steak is. When you go, be prepared to spend a good chunk of change, but it is worth every penny. P.S. Besides the great food, the experience doesn't end just there... they offer the best cocktails in Quito, in our humble opinion!

This is a great place to go for some good cocktails. If you are a cocktail connoisseur, feel free to test the mixologists and they won't let you down. The average price for cocktails is about $12 and they have good food to go along accompanied by a nice view. Some of the best cocktails in Quito.

We've been told that they owner is from the US, and frankly I wouldn't be surprised, because their pizza crust reminds me of a good slice from NJ. They have the classics: pepperoni, pepper and onions, etc. If you want to play it safe then this place will help you fend off any home sickness.

This restaurant offers an excellent experience of Peruvian cuisine. Our favorite dishes are the seafood tacu-tacu gratin and the ceviches, and we never leave without enjoying a good pisco sour. The service completes the experience and you will leave satisfied and wanting to return soon.

If there is a gourmet restaurant that represents the cuisine of Quito and the "Sierra", I cannot think of a better restaurant than this one. The restaurant is inside one of the best hotels in Quito with a long history and an excellent team of waiters, mixologists and hosts who will make you feel like one of the aristocrats from old.

The El Panecillo Virgin is located on the top of the hill of El Panecillo, a loaf-shaped hill in the heart of the city and serves as a backdrop to the historic center of Quito. With a total height of 135 feet including the base, it is the highest statue in Ecuador and one of the highest in South America. On the top of the hill, you can find a handcrafted market and some food shops. Legend has it that the neighborhoods which the virgin faces are blessed, while the ones behind it are neglected and are destitute of its blessing.

If you are looking for beautiful local souvenirs to help you remember those great memories from your visit to Quito, this market is the place for you. It has a vast selection of local crafts at great prices. You won't leave this place without buying some cute souvenirs. Be aware though, that haggling is part of the the culture, therefore you do not have to settle for the price first given, and who knows... you may just enjoy the art of negotiating for the best price... just remember, you want to also support the local artists, so be reasonable.

The TelefériQo, is a gondola lift in Quito, Ecuador, running from the edge of the city center up to the east side of the Pichincha Volcano and it overlooks the Cruz Loma. While up there you can find horse rentals, and biking and hiking trails and much more... just make sure to be prepared for the altitude, since you will be high up there... coca tea should do the trick.

Dress in layers and bring umbrella

Quito is known as a place where you will experience all four seasons in one day. Therefore having a light jacket or sweater and an umbrella with you will help you be prepared for whatever the day brings.

Quito peak hour traffic sucks!

If you need to travel during peak hours, leave early. Bumper to bumper traffic is the norm. If you don’t need to go far, just go for a stroll; make sure you stay in populated areas, which are many around the suite.
Cultuur en gebruiken

Don’t give money to kids

I know this may sound harsh, when I first moved here I’d always give money to kids on the street asking for money, until I found out that they were simply getting used to get money from kindhearted people. When you give them money you are supporting this practice and hurting these kids.

The Altitude can surprise you

The city of Quito is 9,350ft (2,850m) above sea level. This makes altitude sickness a real risk for first-time visitors. If you are not accustomed to this elevation, you might experience strong fatigue on your first day in the city, so simply taking it easy and resting is advised. Other symptoms of altitude sickness include persistent headache or nausea, as well as insomnia. Locals usually take some coca tea to alleviate some of symptoms, but listen to your body and seek medical help if symptoms persist.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

Even though Quito is a cool city, the high altitude and zero latitude mean you are more exposed to UV rays than in other locations, so it’s important you take extra care of your skin. Don’t be afraid to wear a hat and use sunblock during daylight hours. Therefore make sure to bring sunblock, and maybe sunglasses and a hat.
