Walk along the beach past the Old crane and the low lighthouse and then past the Beacon hill fort. When you come to the new Banksy, hang a left and there you have the magnificent Dovercourt beach which then leads to Earlhams ( much wilder) and then a little further on the sea wall to Hamford Water.

Nelson built this unique Circular Fort just in case Napoleon invaded Harwich. And it really is something to behold. Quirky museum downstairs is a must and check for local festivals that happen here in the summer months. 7 minutes walking distance from the Wellie Stern.

Mersea is a tidal island so you can get stuck there! but not for very long... but you would be happy too if you like oysters and seafood. Mersea supplies all the top London restaurants with their oysters and you can eat them to your heart's content at the many beach shacks along the coast here. Best ones are The West Mersea Oyster bar and The Company shed, but all the other are good too.

Lovely little restaurant for lunch or dinner in very pretty Manningtree. There is a little beach here and you can walk along the river bank called The Walls. It's a 15 minute car ride away and if you're in the car and fancy some antique shopping - go to the Manningtree emporium slightly out of town for wicked prices.

For trad fish and chips cooked in beef dripping look no further. All cooked fresh and crispy. If you want something more 80's rather than 60's then right at the end of Dovercourt beach is the chinese fish and chip shop - Mr Fish and Chips ( veg fat) On Wick Lane.

Stunning high end restaurant on the the narrow part of the river Stour within the Dedham vale. This is Constable country and protected by English Heritage. Booking essential for lunch and dinner and even better outside (however they will take walk in's as long as you look the part!).

Get the foot ferry from the Halfpenny pier and go to a whole other county, Suffolk - in 18 minutes! and have lunch or dinner at the Shipwreck in Shotley Marina. If you miss the ferry back its a longer taxi drive back but all good fun!

Sightseeing

This is a continuation of everything right hand along the beach. great with bikes or a really long hike. It's truly natural and remote and looks rather like New Zealand. The seals are based here but you have to see them by joining a boat tour booked on the Halfpenny Pier.

Wrabness beach ( about 15 minutes by car) is something very special. It's a sandy beach on the River Stour, with stilt beach houses like California or Thailand. Park up on the main rd by Wrabness Church and walk down to the beach via the footpaths.

Grayson Perry designed this rather unusual structure. Definitely worth a look and can be part of the Wrabness trip.

English Heritage has listed the whole of Flatford Mill in Dedham. And when you go you will know why. It feels like a Jane Austin novel in front of your eyes. Constable painted the Haywain here and the actual cottage Willie Lot's - is still in the same place across the lake. Hire wooden boats to meander down the river, snack and have tea at the Flatford Mill cafe or go for lunch at Milsoms ( sister restaurant to The Pier and Le Talbooth).
