Sightseeing
This is an amazing vista not far from the lake house that is a 0.2 mile hike. My parents in their mid 70's made it easily. And we have felt comfortable taking 3 year olds up to the top. However, we watched them closely. For as far as you can see, the Ouachita National Forest stretches to the horizon in all directions. This land has been owned by the federal government since the Louisiana Purchase and there are no structures or buildings in sight. It is down a gravel road, so not appropriate for cars low to the ground.
Flatside Pinnacle Trailhead

Mt. Nebo is a mountain biker's dream. The bike trails here are phenomenal. Sunrise point is the most amazing place in Arkansas. Get there early and bring a blanket. With 40 MPH winds, it is cold, even in July. Sunset point is equally spectacular for those who are not early risers. Hiking trails on Mt. Nebo are flat with little change in elevation, either at the bench trail or the rim trail. Watching the sunset over Lake Dardenelle with Mt. magazine in the distance is rejuvenating.

The views from the top of the mountain are amazing. Belted kingfishers are often seen at the base of the mountain. Kids love the playground.

Only 20 minutes from the lake house, Petit Jean State Park offers amazing views, horse back riding, a nice water fall (with an easy boardwalk overview or longer hike down to the Cedar Falls itself), miles of hiking trails and a great place to ride a bike.

1285 Petit Jean Mountain RdOnly 20 minutes from the lake house, Petit Jean State Park offers amazing views, horse back riding, a nice water fall (with an easy boardwalk overview or longer hike down to the Cedar Falls itself), miles of hiking trails and a great place to ride a bike.
Boats are restricted to designated boat lanes, which makes kayaking and canoeing on the lake easy and safe for the whole family. I highly recommend kayaking at sunset and around the Big Island. At sunset, listen for the Great Horned Owls that reside on big island. Osprey and bald eagles also live on the lake. The dark night sky allows you to see a beautiful night sky of the Milky Way.

This is a great country diner with an excellent breakfast. The eggs, bacon, pancakes, gravy and biscuits are wonderful. My son loves the chocolate gravy. They have good cheeseburgers too. Fried catfish is a treat.
