A maritime city right on the coast. With all the usual amenities of a city but with a picturesque coastal front with beautiful views of the English Channel. The Barbican area is particularly with its cobbled streets and individual shops and eating places.

Salcombe is one of mine and my husbands favourite places. It is so pretty with pubs and cafes that sit right overlooking the River. Quirky, independent shops are also worth a look. Lots of places to just sit, relax and contemplate!

Torquay is about 8 miles from us and Torre Abbey Beach is the main beach in the town, named because of the medieval monastery that sits just behind the beach. Lovely sandy beach but it gets very busy so you may prefer a quieter beach as shown in this guide.

Torbay RoadTorquay is about 8 miles from us and Torre Abbey Beach is the main beach in the town, named because of the medieval monastery that sits just behind the beach. Lovely sandy beach but it gets very busy so you may prefer a quieter beach as shown in this guide.
Located in Babbacombe which is in Torquay. This beach is situated at the bottom of a steep hill but for those who dont want to walk it, you can get the cliff side railway.
It is well worth the effort, as you will be rewarded with a beautiful beach, beach shops and a really nice seaside restaurant. I've even seen seals frolicking in the surf at Babbacombe!

There are toilets and a cafe at the bottom. Beautiful views.
Meadfoot Beach is just up the coast from Torre Abbey. There is free parking along the road if you get there early enough or a carpark at the end of the beach with an ice cream van!
A nice sit in and takeaway cafe on the beach and toilets close-by.

Between Torquay and Teignmouth, Shaldon is a tiny village right on the beach, very popular with tourists. You can take a ferry from Teignmouth to Shaldon and spend the afternoon overlooking the estuary in The Ness which is a Victorian building whic stands up on the cliff which serves lovely coffee as well as food.

Only 5 minutes drive from us is this beautiful country park with a lake at its centre. Perfect for either sitting and relaxing with a takeaway coffee in your hand or having a walk with the dog around the lake perimeter. Toilets and car parking on site.

The closest park to us, just a couple of minutes drive from our house. The river Lemon runs through it into town and it had woodland and open grass space to let the dog roam freely.
Drinks are available from an on-site van and you can park also for free but it can get busy so you may be better to park for free on the main road and walk in.

About 15 minutes drive and almost opposite Trago Mills Shopping Centre. Stover also has a large lake at its centre. Plenty of wildlife to see and a lovely dog walk around the perimeter (keep dogs on leads though)

The Ness

Redeveloped into the beautiful place that it is today by Peter de Savary, the Cary Arms is located almost on the beach at Babbacombe. You can get coffees here or book a table for lunch or dinner. Either way, the view from the deck outside is beautiful and a lovely place to relax.
There is a car park at the bottom by the beach but be warned, it is quite tricky navigating the hill especially for inexperienced drivers. Some may prefer to leave their car at the top and walk down or better still get a boat from Torquay to drop you there!

The food served here is so so good. It's the sort of place where you could order something that you dont particularly like but here you will love it! The host and staff are lovely and the food has won numerous awards. A little pricey so check the menu first online but if you have a special occasion to celebrate this is a lovely place to do it.

The host and staff are lovely and the food has won numerous awards. A little pricey so check the menu first online but if you have a special occasion to celebrate this is a lovely place to do it.
If you are just looking for a drink or coffee in a nice setting, this place is perfect as it has an outside space right on the river and views from inside the restaurant. I cant comment on the food as have not been there recently but it is a beautiful setting to sit and contemplate!

Lovely atmosphere, right in the centre of town. Large authentic Italian restaurant suitable for couples and families. Friendly staff and good quality food.

The nicest thai food in the area. Great atmosphere, all waiting staff are dressed in thai costume. They also do takeaway. advisable to book.

Great food, efficient service and lively atmosphere. This is a large restaurant that we have seen grow over the years due to its success. I think this is the best Indian food in our area.
