Local Hikes
An easy hike of about 2 miles one way to a cascade-style waterfall of the South Fork Tuolumne River. Carlon Falls is 20-30 feet high and with a pool at its base and a series of small cascades downstream.
You can visit this waterfall without going through the Yosemite National Park entrance gate (which requires an entrance fee). The falls are inside the park, but the trailhead isn't.
From Whites Gulch Road, drive 21 Miles East on Highway 120 to Evergreen Road and turn left. Travel about .7 mile to the Carlon Day Use area, cross the bridge and park on the Northeast side of the bridge over the South Fork of the Tuolumne River.
Trailhead is at this parking lot. You should be able to see some rainbow trout that live in the river. In the spring, there can be some nice wildflowers.

Carlon Falls Trail

Relatively easy hike to Wapama Falls at the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite. This hike is about 5 miles round trip and during the spring, there can be great wildflowers. There is a bridge that crosses over the falls so you can get quite close (and often wet when it is really full)
It can get very hot here in the summer so bring plenty of water.
This area of the Park gets fewer visitors and is less crowded, but still very scenic.
Wapama Falls

The falls are not very high and can be understated--they are more of a cascade and you don't need to do the entire hike since the river is very scenic. This is a moderate trail along the Tuolumne River which is about 7.5 miles round trip to Preston Falls. The falls are not very high and can be understated--they are more of a cascade and you don't need to do the entire hike since the river is very scenic. Watch out for poison oak which is very common along the trail.
