This is a typical neighborhood, just on the edge of the city. It has a great mixture of old, young, with little or quite some money. And also lots of cultural backgrounds. Also because groningen is a real ‘student city’ and our neighborhood is located at only a 5 minute bike ride from the big student complex, ‘zernike’. So lots of international students as well!

Definitely a must see! Great for a stroll or a run. Some nature in the midst of the city. On sunny days it’s always ‘packed’ with sun-seekers. Although summer holidays are usually a little bit quieter, since lots of students leave for their home town or even their home country (lots of international students). Even in winter this is a very popular spot for people to work-out together and parents and kids because of the playgrounds in the park. It’s just a beautiful place.

Buses and scooters!
Buses are super easy to take into the city. Also: we have 2 ‘shared scooter’ services! I love them and use them from time to time myself. They’re called GoSharing and Felyx. Easy to download if you have a credit card and smartphone ;) and a super nice way to see the city and get to your destination quickly and comfortably.

Some Dutch/Groningen basics
You might already know some Dutch words, like: Hello = Hallo. In Groningen we make it even more simple ;) when people great each other they often say: moi! It’s like the English “oi” but with an M at the start 🤪. Some more basics: thank you = dankuwel. Where is...? = Waar is..? How are you? = Hoe gaat het?

Very kid friendly city
Overall Groningen is a very kid friendly city. People are relaxed and patient most of the time and will try to accommodate for you, even if a place is not specially ‘designed’ for kids. The city also has some very nice shops for kids and parents. 2 of them are on ‘zwanestraat’ and they’re called Noppies (pregnancy and newborn stuff) and ‘Musjes’, with lots of eco friendly toys and also carriers and stuff! And then there’s ‘Wijsneus’ at the vismarkt which is very hip and happening 😄
