This is a healing well. It is NOT a wishing well so please do NOT throw coins in the clean spring. It works like this: sore foot? Tie a cotton sock to a twig and as it rots away so your foot will get better. Bad headaches? Hang your woollen bonnet on a tree... and so on. Emphasis on natural materials but now nylon means nothing rots as it once did. In the distant past Travellers used to come and take the rags away to be used in paper manufacture but alas such recycling is no longer carried out. Vee reckons it works, but she is not telling you what she hung up there!

Quirky wee spa town where Victorian gentry went to take the waters, Strathpeffer feels oh so English! Victorian OldStation, the trains long gone, alas. Great local walks, including up the Cat's Back to Knockfarrel. Carved Pictish symbol stone. Highland Museum of Childhood is well worth a visit.

Gorgeous wee museum which is really more of a Museum of Highland Childhood. Toys but also myths and legends of childhood here. Suitable for children from 8 to 108! The museum is located in a beautifully conserved railway station with a nice cafe next door.

This is a fabulous walk up to a clearly visible and well preserved vitrified fort. either drive up and park or walk up from Strathpeffer.

Stunning waterfalls where you can see salmon seeking to reach their spawning grounds by leaping the falls of the River Blackwater. It is aptly named - the peat makes the water as dark as Cocacola and the drumming falls make it frothy. Lovely walk there and back about a mile in all but a steepish pull on the way back. Free. Better than the more commercialised Falls of Shin further north.

Do not even think about climbing Ben Wyvis, our beloved weather mountain, whose name means 'noble', unless you have 7 hours to spare, decent walking boots, appropriate clothing for the weather and are reasonably fit. Never mess about on or with our mountains. Sections of this mountain are very steep. Views from the top out of this world. You may see ptarmigan, grouse, deer and golden eagles.

This is the place where plate tectonics first began to be understood by geologists. A steep clamber up a rocky path rewards the walker with a glimpse of the Moine Thrust, where some of the molten core of the earth has been forced to the surface by colliding forces. Before this, all rock formation was presumed to be built up in ordered layers. Read Vee's award-winning short story Cinder here www.scottishgeology.com/HughMiller. If you aren't into geology go anyway - it is wild and wonderful.

An ancient place of pilgrimage, Applecross is accessible via a long coast road or the notorious Bealach na Ba (pronounced Byahlach na Bah, the Pass of the Cattle). Do not attempt the Bealach access without decent brakes and a head for heights. superb views. Vee did a lot of the interpretation in and around Applecross. On the coast road in look out for the little beach at Sand and the neolithic rock shelter just beyond it. Fabulous walks.

One of our favourite Highland restaurants anywhere, this wee place is tucked away nearvthe junction with the Bealach na Ba road and serves delicious local food. Quieter than the bustling Applecross Inn.
