Loreto Bay Guidebook

There is a farmers market that occurs every Wednesday and Saturday in Nopolo (just north of Loreto Bay). Lots of fresh fruits and veggies, baked goods, fresh cheese, eggs, and a variety of delicious to-go foods (stews, tamales, chile rellenos, etc. depending on the day). Open from approximately 9 am - 1 pm, but get there early for the best selection. On the corner of Mision San Luis Gonzaga and Mortier.

Many restaurants and shops in Loreto do not accept credit cards so carrying enough cash is important. You will get a better exchange rate from merchants by paying in Mexican Pesos. If you have not exchanged currency prior to your arrival, you may get pesos from the ATM at Pedro's Places in Loreto Bay, or these BBVA Bancomer locations: BBVA Bancomer Telephone: 613-135-0315 or 613-135-0014 Two Locations: 1. Francisco I. Madero – near Palacio Municipal (City Hall) and the downtown central plaza 2. Highway 1 – outside of town

It is very easy to rent a car from the Loreto Airport for driving up the coast to beaches, Danzante, San Javier, or into Loreto Town. Rentals require additional insurance that is typically NOT clearly outlined in the rental quote, so please contact your rental car agency in advance for a total cost estimate to avoid surprises. Alternatively, one could certainly get by with taxis - a taxi from the airport to our neighborhood costs roughly $25. Once out of the airport taxis are $15 each way. There are often taxis parked in front of the Loreto Bay Hotel or Wine Bar waiting for fares.

You'll need lots of sunscreen - Loreto enjoys roughly 360 days of sunshine each year! Other items to consider: mosquito repellent sunglasses sun hat flip flops hiking shoes swimsuit & cover up personal toiletries snorkel gear Dress code for Loreto is generally very casual. You may wish to bring a dress or collared shirt and slacks for a nice meal out, but it would not at all be necessary. Golf attire for related activities at Danzante and Loreto Bay, of course. :)

If you love breathtaking views, the 17th hole at Danzante Bay's TPC golf course is a bucket list item for many golf enthusiasts! There are also restaurants and spa services available at Villa Del Palmar. Reservations required.

Mark and Evelyn are our neighbors and they make amazing gelato that you will find around town! La Cholla market in Loreto Bay is the closest spot to grab a pint or two without ordering for delivery. They deliver directly to our home and will even offer to leave it in the pass-through cubby for a contact-free delivery! PLEASE BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL AT THE HIGHWAY ENTRANCE/EXIT TO LORETO TOWN. The highway splits at that intersection into one-way sections, is not clearly marked, and is very dangerous. Many people leaving Loreto Town heading south accidentally turn left into the one-way oncoming traffic at that intersection and there have been a number of head-on collisions. Proceed with caution as you learn the traffic flow/patterns. Please drive VERY cautiously if you choose to at night, there are stray donkeys, goats, cattle, pedestrians, cyclists, etc. Go slow and be safe!

Head to the beach for spectacular sunrise and sunset views! Everyone is welcome to use the palapas (with the exception of those on the south end with loungers designated for the resort) for shade. The water is typically very calm in the mornings and perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Snorkeling is best over by Nopolo Rock, and you can go to the southern side by crossing the golf green (please do not walk on the course itself) to the tiny sandy beach. Beware of stingrays - they like to hide in the sand, so be sure to shuffle your feet as you wade through the water!

The town square in the center of Loreto is a great place to grab a bite to eat or a cocktail, see the Mision, people-watch, walk the malecon, and do a little shopping. There is usually live music in the evenings at one of the many restaurants. There are lots of gems along the tree-lined, cobblestone streets that make for a nice afternoon of relaxed wandering. There is also a market held on Saturday mornings starting at 9am.

There are two liquor stores in Loreto Bay and a beer/convenience store: La Catrina Liquor is located on the sea side of the paseo in the southern section of the neighborhood. Cactus Liquor is located on the mountain side of the paseo 2 doors down from the Wine Cellar in the southern section of the neighborhood. Modelorama is a beer/convenience store located on the sea side of the paseo in the northern section of the neighborhood near Pedro's restaurant and the Agua Viva Plaza (bright green building).

There is a small pharmacy located next to Dos Lobos in the northern (Agua Viva) section of the neighborhood on the sea side of the paseo. La Cholla also has pharmaceutical items available and is located on the mountain side of the paseo in the southern (Founders) section of the neighborhood.

Baja Bike and Board is a great place to rent additional bikes (beach cruisers and step through E Bikes), or rent paddle boards. They will even deliver to Loreto Bay! Located at 229 Francisco Madero in Loreto town.

On Friday nights and Saturday mornings there is a market in the Salvatierra Plaza in the middle of town with merchants selling fruits, veggies, cheese, honey, and other foods, as well as artisans selling their homemade goods and other wares.

Fernando will meet and exceed your filleting expectations. Located just off Agua Dulce and Paseo De Lopez Mateo (the Malecon), Fernando's is no more than a 2 minute drive from Loreto's marina. From the marina take the first right onto Calle Agua Dulce (dirt road). Fernando's Fish Fillet and Cleaning is just up the road on the right hand side, number 160. No reservations needed~ first come first serve. Just drop on by and Fernando will fillet the fish however you want. He can also smoke your fish, or vacuum pack it for you to take home.
