Adventure

There are many different tidal bore river rafting businesses close by for a nearby adventurous experience. This is just one: Experience the fun and excitement of the power of the highest tides in the world by rafting on the Shubenacadie River in Nova Scotia! The water from the Bay of Fundy gets funneled into the Shubenacadie river to create a surge of water. The front wave of this surge is known as the tidal bore. Few places in the world have a tidal bore and even fewer can compare in size! After the tidal bore goes by the river reverses direction and starts flowing inland at nearly 30km/hr.

Day Trip Worthy

Peggy's Cove (140 km, 1 hr 40 min) A historical landmark and the one place we always visit when we have company from away. It is a natural beauty with splashing huge waves upon the natural giant boulder rocks of the coast line. You can climb all over the rocks (AVOIDING THE WET DARK ROCKS), burn some calories, and take some amazing pictures. I always found the climbing fun as a kid and adults love the simple natural beauty. Costs nothing to just look, plenty of tourist type places along the way including a restaurant on site.

Cabot Trail (309 km away, 3 hr 27 min) is an absolutely beautiful place anytime of year but even more popular when the tree leaves have turned color in autumn. ABSOLUTELY breath taking views and therapeutic to the soul. If you just want to drive the trail in a day you can with time enough for a few shopping and eating stops. You can also spend more time on Cape Breton Island and explore and experience more. I found the Ingonish Beach to be a beautiful stop, you can spend some time swimming there with no admission fees. Plenty of beautiful experiences on Cape Breton Island. Check out www.cbisland.com GOLFING: Sweeping cliffs, majestic ocean views, and miles of green—Cape Breton Island was made for golf. Find a course to suit every mood, from championship courses to Canada’s only true links. HIKING: Our Island is renowned as a hiker’s paradise, a challenging beauty that demands exploration. Breathtaking landscapes await you on every Highland crest, low-tide beach, and serene trek through old-growth forest. Lose yourself in our wilderness. Discover our wild heart with each trail. FORTRESS LOUISB0URG NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE: Just east of Sydney, Nova Scotia, you’ll discover a portal to the past at one of North America’s busiest 18th-century seaports. Founded by the French in 1713, this reconstruction of the original French town and fortifications is the largest—and best—of its kind in North America, offering a heavy dose of history and culture with each unique experience.

Visit Sherbrooke Village Museum (143 Km away, approx. 1 hr 40 min) Sherbrooke Village is Nova Scotia’s largest Provincial Museum with 25 heritage buildings brought to life by costumed interpreters. In the 1860s, timber tall ships and gold ruled life along the St. Mary’s River, turning the community of Sherbrooke into a prosperous boom town. Today, the picturesque village still stands proud, just as it did more than 100 years ago. At Sherbrooke Village, every day is a trip back in time as Nova Scotia’s 19th century heritage is brought to life by costumed interpreters, including blacksmiths, potters, weavers, wood turners and printers. Get dressed up and “Step Into 1867” and become a part of the Village story. Visit our new Indigenous Art Centre or have your picture taken at Canada’s only commercial Ambrotype glass photo studio. Our activities, learning camps, workshops for children and adults, and schedule of special events make it easy to get your hands on history all summer long! Admission is charged. There is plenty of free parking on-site. Bus tours are welcome. Site is partially wheelchair accessible. Picnic area is available. Visit the village’s gift shop for a wide selection of unique village crafted pottery, ironworks, weaving and wooden furniture, hand-made gifts and souvenirs or enjoy a delicious meal at the Village restaurant.
