The Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center details the area’s coal mining history, and the life of the town’s namesake, Native American athlete Jim Thorpe. In nearby Lansford, No. 9 Mine and Museum is set in a 19th-century anthracite coal mine. On the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, century-old coaches powered by diesel engines take passengers into Lehigh Gorge State Park. Good restaurants and fun town. About a 20 minute ride.
