Neighbourhoods

Come to the tip of the Peninsula, the part of the world where land and sea come together in perfect harmony. From the limestone corridors of Sorrento’s history-laden buildings to the foreshore where holidaymakers have played by Port Phillip for years, visit once and you’ll want to stay for ever. Boatloads of pleasure-seekers from Melbourne have been coming since in the early 1900s, up from the paddle steamers to a town where wandering up and down in your finery was the main attraction. Now you will find glamorous shopping, high-end dining and cafes of all descriptions. Take in the view from Hotel Sorrento, and you simply must grab an ice-cream from Mubble. Drive a little further to Portsea and find French cuisine sitting right alongside the white sand of Portsea front beach. From the sparkling front beaches to the rugged coastal ridges and rock pools of Bass Strait, visitors still dare to dream of a lifestyle full of sun, surf and sand and the sampling of Peninsula-grown and crafted cuisine that stands alone on the world stage. From holiday shacks to grand residences, this resort-style region still attracts seasonal partygoers, beachcombers and fine-diners alike. Hospitality is exactly what it says it is: meet and greet restaurateurs, providores and paddock-to-plate innovators serving up their best throughout the seasons, whether you’re at the pub watching the sun sink or at an intimate dining destination. Come visit this land of sweet treats by the bay, the place where the back beach churns, the ferry roams and the dolphins play.

This beach offers safe sandy, family friendly beaches that are ideal for swimming and boating. There is a jetty, several boat ramps, and attractive foreshore facilities with picnic areas, shelters, playgrounds and walking tracks including part of the 28 kilometre Bay Trail that extends from Safety beach to Portsea. If you enjoy snorkelling then head for the ‘Octopus’s Garden’ at the Rye Pier. This is a 200 metre underwater trail with signage introducing you to the local underwater wildlife. During the summer, Rye's popular carnival is located beside the pier. The main concentration of shops is located east of Dundas Street and includes a hotel, eateries, a major supermarket and other retailers. There is also a great variety of accommodation in the area, including camping along the foreshore. Rye also has an impressive ocean beach on the Bass Strait coastline, with magnificent walks along the clifftops that form part of the 25 kilometre Coastal Walk through the magnificent Mornington Peninsula National Park that protects this beautiful yet fragile coastline. This is also ‘The Cups’ golf region, where sand dunes provide naturally contoured challenges and the sandy soils drain quickly for good year round play. The multi award winning Peninsula Hot Springs is nearby, and is Victoria’s only geo-thermal hot springs. Rye is approximately a 1 hour and 25 minute drive (100 kilometres) south of Melbourne. Dogs

Dogs can be exercised off-leash along the beach between Blairgowrie Yacht Club and The Dorothy Houghton Walk. This area is known as Cameron’s Bight. Another great beach for walking dogs off leash is Shelley’s Beach in Portsea. If walking dogs on other beaches off-leash please read the laws which vary according to land ownership, time of day and season. Stringer’s Reserve in Blairgowrie is also a good off-leash area. There are ovals in Blairgowrie, Sorrento and Rye where people congregate with dogs.

Reduce carbon emissions

There are solar panels on the roof of the property. Please try to use the dish washer, washing machine and dryer during daylight. You can save by showering during the day light hours also. After the sun goes down electricity will automatically be switched to the energy company. TV, heating/air conditioning, cooking in the oven will run off power at high prices from the grid. Please try to use the BBQ to cook during the warmer months rather than the oven to reduce CO2 emissions.
