City/town information

World famous Galveston was Texas’ largest, wealthiest city in the late 1800s. The Strand, now a historic district, was known as the Wall Street of the Southwest. But the city that had survived Spanish and French explorers, pirates, the Texas Revolution and the Civil War was ravaged by the monstrous hurricane of 1900. Luckily, not soon after it began a spirited renewal that continues to this day." - Ellen Honey (April 2014)
