This area is located on the west side of Avenida 5 de Outubro, in front of Jardim do Pescador Olhanense, and will have started to be built at the beginning of the 18th century, in the place where the hut houses existed. The old nucleus of Olhão, Barreta, is defined by having few straight and wide streets, alleys without order, with houses in the same irregularity in which the huts were, however, extremely clean and whitewashed to the middle of the street, in what women care. The fishermen's house is ground floor, rectangular in plan, has a roof terrace that can have a lookout and the rooms are generally vaulted and the kitchen is at the rear of the house. "The vaults are a covering process that predominates in Olhão, covered with tiles and whitewashed, in order to be usable" (1). These houses have balloon chimneys that are characterized by a small tower that ends in the shape of a cube with a cover inserted into the interior, and these chimneys will be used until the 20th century. The materials used in the construction of the walls are masonry, stone or brick and the roof terrace was also covered and the walls were plastered with whitewash. But the building elements that characterize Barreta's Barrio will succeed one another throughout the city, due to population growth. The particularities of these agglomerates are the roof terraces on the ground floor houses, which were later increased in height with the viewpoint and the contramirante which is accessed by external stairs. It is these characteristics that make some scholars look at the originalities of the houses in Olhão, as they are a copy (although not strict) of the Moroccan house, not only due to similar economic or climate conditions but also due to the frequent contacts of Olhanenses with the peoples of North Africa (2). Nowadays this area has been very modified in architectural terms, as the houses were modernized due to the needs of the owners, changing the floor plan and the facades, where tiles were placed. There are some abandoned houses that in little or nothing were modified and that could be used as an example of the old houses in Barreta. What lasted over time were the irregular and narrow streets, but in other areas of the city you can still see the architectural typology that characterized Barreta, such as next to the railway where the backyard to the roof terrace or the viewpoint still remains. some balloon chimneys.

Making the transition between sea and land, Ria Formosa is a large lagoon system that stretches along 60 km of the east coast of the Algarve and occupies about 18 thousand ha, between the Ancão peninsula in the municipality of Loulé and Manta Rota, in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António. It is the most important wetland in the south of Portugal and includes a wide variety of habitats: barrier islands, marshes, sandbanks, dunes, salt pans, fresh and brackish ponds, water courses, forests, agricultural areas, which it also provides an enormous diversity of fauna and flora. Classified as a wetland of international interest, Ria Formosa is a reference for its birdlife. It is a wintering place for birds from northern and central Europe, it is an area for the passage of migratory routes and is home to rare species such as the sultan hen (Porphyrio porphyrio), the park's symbol. From a botanical point of view, it stands out for the vegetation of the dune and salt marsh areas. Authentic nursery of marine species, it is also a center for the production of bivalve molluscs. Be sure to set out to discover this Natural Park, visiting the cities and towns that developed in communion with the Ria, enjoying the vast sands of the barrier islands, walking along the hiking trails that cross it or by boat trips. Be enchanted by the gracefulness of the water birds and sharpen your gaze as you may eventually see another important inhabitant of the Ria Formosa: the chameleon.

The Armona Island is undoubtedly a paradise to visit in the Algarve. The extensive gold beach and the turquoise blue sea with its warm water invite all those who come to enjoy this wonder of nature. The sea beach is situated at the western end of Armona Island, in the vicinity of Barra do Lavajo. To reach the Armona Island you can catch a ferry or water taxi at Olhão. Then enjoy the ride through the labyrinths of sand of Ria Formosa. After, and to reach the beach on the side of the sea, you need to walk on a path with an extension of about 1.5km , which is a perfect walk to glimpse the dunes and feel the aromatic flora. But you will see that it deserves the effort, because you will feel like entering in the Paradise! And there you can also find the Chameleon beach bar, considered by "The Guardian" newspapper as the best beach bar of Europe. But you can also chose to stay at the beach on the side of the Ria Formosa, also classified as a bathing beach. Here you have the opportunity to enjoy the clear, calmer waters of the estuary by spending your beach time on the sands closer to the quay. INFRASTRUCTURES: Bar / restaurant, supervised beach, sunbeds and sunshades, toilet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xb4bN8jfAfo

It’s part of Faro Municipality, located in Ria Formosa, is in front of Olhão city, a place where we can catch the boat to go to this Island. The Culatra Island is part of the barrier islands which protect the ria Formosa, as well as Barreta Island (Desert Island), Armona, Tavira, and Cabanas. An Island that shelter 1000 inhabitants where, for the most part, dedicate themselves to fishing and tourism. This Island is formed by three population centers, Culatra itself, which shelters predominantly fishermen, and in the summer season, many tourists, and also the Hangares and the Farol, then in summer also become the home of many tourists. This Island is constituted by a wide coast about 6km of length and a width that varies between 100m to 900m dependent on the tide. Along the coast, it’s possible to walk from Culatra to the core of Farol, while we enjoy and perhaps dive into the clear and transparent waters. Is reported that, initially, this Island served as a refuge for preope with leprosy and other contagious diseases. In this way, it’s said that the survivors then formed the Culatrense people and culture. In 1998, during the I World War, the construction of Naval Aviation Center was begun, directed to the anti-submarine war. In spite of its purpose, this center was used as an infrastructure to support the field firing range of the Navy. The Culatra Island has been developing so well, that attracted a lot of tourists who exchange their cities for the Island. Endowed with Restaurants where we can taste the typical food of Algarve, like grilled fish, stew and seafood, a school that assures the education until the 6th grade, a social center, a post office, a ward and, more recently, a helicopter landing strip. Unlike Farol Island, the coast of Culatra is a little more distant, taking about 20 minutes from one side to the coast. If you are looking for peace and tranquility, away from the stress of the city, Culatra Island is a perfect choice. However, if do you prefer only to get to know this Island for a few hours, you can take advantage of the "Volta Às Ilhas" a tour provided by the Passeios Ria Formosa, so you don´t only end up knowing Culatra Island as well Farol Island, Hangares and the Armona Island, and it’s in Culatra that the lunch stop occurs.

Farol beach is situated on Culatra Island, in the far west of the island. Here is located the Cabo de Santa Maria, an important milestone for the navigation. The beaches have a length of approximately 7 kilometers to the tip of the East. There are desert areas where you can spend the day on full rest. The beach near the Nova Barra has lifeguard surveillance and support. The restaurants in the island are very appreciated for fresh fish and seafood. A little paradise!
