Only accessible by a 2.5 mile long train tunnel, Whittier is a fantastic place to visit for a quick day trip. You can enter the tunnel on every half-hour and leave at the top of every hour. There's a little ice cream shop along with a few restaurants, including Swiftwater for seafood. It is $13 for a car or truck to go through the tunnel (exit is included in the fee).
Check out Cove Creek, the abandoned military barracks from WWII and the lake at the camping area just to the left when you exit the tunnel into Whittier.
