When two storied gay bars—owned by a notorious lesbian operator—shut down in Newtown, Sydney’s second gay ghetto, the community moved here. This inclusive establishment offers great cocktails and even greater times—as well as delicious barbecue in the backyard beer garden. And it’s open until 4 am on Saturdays. Although very mixed, this is one of the most popular places in Sydney amongst the lesbian community. The Inner West has long been a working-class lesbian heartland, and vibrant Newtown is still one of the best places for lesbians to meet and mingle.

Situated on the bustling hub of King Street by Newtown Station, The Bank is a master of late night venues and a Newtown institution. Although you can’t see it from the street, locals know that in past the public bar the sprawling venue hides Newtown’s best beer garden, an outdoor terrace, craft beer bar and live music.

If your looking for a beer and don't want to walk, this is probably the best option. Right next to the train station, this modern tavern is a good place to start the night.

Popular mixed bar in Newtown. Some locals are still mourning the loss of the grungier pre-renovation version of this bar, but the new outdoor balcony and high-ceiling room out the back is a favourite.
