Food scene

Great place for cheap beer, fruity drinks and people watching. It has an all around good vibe with an eclectic mix of people of locals. Their food is really good as well, if you don't want anything heavy (Their tots are pretty dope). They have a pretty neat outdoor area in the warmer months with a tiki bar! Be sure to bring your I.D. however, otherwise they will not serve you even if you look retirement aged.

Julian's is a delicious staple of Providence and is known for their Sunday Funday brunches, great food/drinks, and an overall chill atmosphere. Julian's is also a great place to meet locals. The food is super yummy, but waiting to be seated on Sundays can be a while, so a drink or two might be in order in the meantime. ;)

This place legit has the best New York style pizza outside of New York. I love love love pizza - to the point that I ate pizza for lunch and dinner everyday in Chicago as I tried out the different versions of their deepish. Napolitano's pizza is flavorful, with a perfect amount of cheese and sauce. It's super cheap too - One can get two giant slices and a drink for $5!

I love Mexican food, and nothing compares to the amazing meals I've had in Mexico itself, without a doubt. This place is great, however, and easily the best Mexican food I've had in the East coast - hands down.

Neighborhoods

Welcome to my neighborhood! It's an interesting mix of Italian foodie paradise, working class families, young professionals, artists, and students. If you are looking for amazing pizza, Italian, Thai, Chinese, you name it - Atwells Avenue rarely disappoints. If you are looking for something organic, more "mom and pop", vegan, and perhaps cheaper - the area between Broadway and Westminster Avenues, which are a short walk away from Atwells ave. is more likely more your roll with plenty of options to please your palette.

If you arrive by bus or train, Downtown is the first thing you see - with the capitol building and Providence Place Mall dominating many of our first impressions. Separating Federal Hill from the more polished East Side Providence (Not to be confused with East Providence - it will cause you a hefty Uber bill), downtown i's a compact slice of urban heaven with great restaurants, shopping, skating, sightseeing, and events. The convention center, usually frequented by our guests, is roughly a 20 minute walk from the house. The 96 bus conveniently stops 3 blocks from the house on Atwells Avenue, and reaches downtown in only a couple of minutes - eventually crossing over to East Side Providence, where the Brown University main campus is located.

College Hill, or how the general area is called - East Side (not to be confused with the more suburban, East Providence) is home to most of the Brown University and RISD campuses. The area is known for its more stablished artistic vibe, Ivy League history, and beautiful old architecture. There are also a number of antique shops in the neighborhood for afternoon treasure hunts. One can easily find great restaurants on Wickenden Street, Thayer Street, and Wayland Square.

Which neighborhood to stay in?

Deciding which neighborhood to stay in is always tough, but it always depends on personal taste. Downtown Providence A beautiful downtown, with typical downtown problems for cities of compatible sizes. The convention center, the shopping mall, and capitol building are all within walking distance from each other. Is it dangerous? No. In fact, I don't know of anyone who's had any issues. Sadly, like most downtown areas, you will see your occasional homeless person, and your American standard bus terminal. Airbnbs are limited in the downtown area, however, but can be easily be reached by foot from both Federal Hill and College Hill. For visitors who need other modes of transportation, Uber is super cheap and the buses are reliable and can take you anywhere your little heart desires. Federal Hill Simply put - Federal Hill is very diverse. With its little Italy, student population, working class families of all backgrounds, artists, transplants from College Hill and surrounding costlier cities like Boston - it has a little bit of everything. Rates go a little lower than College Hill since CH is easily the most kept up of the two, quieter, and the most aesthetically pleasing. With that said, there are many charms in Federal Hill, like the mansions on Broadway and Atwells ave. as a whole is a culinary attraction for tourists and locals alike. If you value diversity you will love Federal Hill. Is it dangerous? No. During my two years of hosting airbnb, I have never had a guest have any issues with safety in the neighborhood. The one issue, however, is car break-ins - which is common in urban areas all over the country. Practicing common sense is the best advice here and not leaving visible valuables in your car. College Hill (East Side of Providence) Beautiful, classic, pristine are words that I have heard being used for East Side as a whole. If you prefer or are accustomed to a quieter atmosphere, and can afford a little bit more per night - I recommend College Hill.

Bringing your car to Providence for a few months for school or a work w/o parking? Read below.

You will need a Vehicle registration for parking. Successful applicants will receive a window sticker that must be applied to the upper left hand corner of the rear window (driver’s side). Once the permit sticker is applied, you may leave your vehicle overnight on a street designated for such use by signs reading, “NO PARKING 2AM – 5AM EXCEPT BY RESIDENT PERMIT.” Permit-holders are required to obey existing signs and regulations. If a parking ban (such as a snow emergency) is declared, you must remove your car from the street for the duration of the ban. The cost of a permit is $100 per car for cars registered in Providence, and $200 per car for cars registered outside of Providence. Any unpaid City of Providence parking tickets issued on the vehicle registration must be paid in order to obtain a parking permit. Residents with an overnight parking pass can also purchase guest passes. Guest passes cost $25 per year and enable visitors to park on the street five nights per month. To register, bring your vehicle registration (original, no photocopies) and proof of residency when applying for your permit. Acceptable forms of proof include a drivers license, mortgage, rental agreement and utility bill. Permits may be purchased at the following locations: • Traffic Engineering (60 Ernest Street), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This location accepts the following payment methods: money orders, checks and credit cards. • Municipal Court at the Public Safety Complex (325 Washington Street), Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This location accepts the following payment methods: money orders, cash and credit cards. For overnight parking permit renewals, come to Traffic Engineering or the Municipal Court at the Public Safety Complex during normal business hours. You can also renew your overnight parking permit by mailing a self-addressed, stamped envelope with payment to Traffic Engineering, 60 Ernest Street, Providence, RI 02905.
