Largest private home in the US, beautiful grounds, a definite must see. Beautiful Christmas decorations, they have great restaurants and many places to have a picnic (coolers allowed). Advance tickets usually discounted, may have to reserve a tour time on busy weekends.

They have a few locations not too far from Asheville, we recommend the Natahala River, 1.25 hrs from Asheville. Great fun and the restaurant Rivers End is great.

Cataloochee is a great place to visit, there are reintroduced Elk that you can see most of the year. Only about 1 hour from Asheville there are great places to hike and check out the old buildings. Pack a lunch and bring your camera. To get there some of the roads are gravel but worth the drive. https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/cataloochee.htm
