Guide to Ravenswood, Lincoln Square & Andersonville

Food Scene

We are located between three neighborhoods: Ravenswood, Lincoln Square and Andersonville. We are lucky that there are amazing restaurants in all three neighborhoods. A variety of cuisines are available. This list ranges from coffee shops to pizza or dessert places to date-night restaurants. Our favorite Thai place consistently offers delicious meals from a broad menu. The small dining room is sleek, white, and modern. Family-owned, the staff are all very friendly. They do a large takeout business, as well, but we prefer to walk over and eat there. They are closed Mondays.

Not traditional Chicago pizza, rather it is Quad Cities style, cut into squares/rectangles rather than pie slices. The crust uses a delicious malt flavoring and the cheese is on top of a yummy red sauce. A gluten-free dough is available too. This is a family-friendly pizza place. We highly recommend the mozzarella sticks, the monkey bread, and their huge salads (good for two to share). There is a full bar which offers 100+ Midwestern craft beers, house cocktails, wines by the glass & bottle, and their own Roots Root Beer.

With a focus on Southern heirloom cooking and sustainably grown food (both livestock & crops), the chef uses some classic/historic Southern recipes. I especially like the crawfish and cheese Hushpuppies, crispy catfish and fried chicken. Make a reservation via Open Table.

Ravenswood outpost of the original on Western. It retains the classic sundaes & cones plus a selection of hand-dipped chocolates. The sandwiches, however, not so memorable. Stick with the ice cream and candy. Airbnb keeps insisting this is a coffee shop. It is not!

One of my favorites in Lincoln Square. Interesting and well-prepared food, attentive & friendly service, lovely atmosphere, plus a terrific back garden patio in the summer. You can easily make a shared dinner just of appetizers and side dishes. Try the whipped ricotta, the ravioli, and the half chicken. Apple fritters too! The Sunday family dinner special is a local favorite.

A local chain of pizza places. They are known for a delicious butter-crust deep dish pizza. Although there is a gorgeous bar here, go for the food. They offer hearty, traditional Italian cooking. The staff can help you pair your food selections with craft cocktails and wine. The setting is very warm and stylish, but loud! They are best known for their meatballs--moist, hearty and with a delicious sauce. These are not your mother's meatballs (well, not my mother's, anyway). They are quite large. You can even get an "impossible" plant-based "meat"ball. Half-price bottles of wine on Mondays and a good prix fixe menu on Tuesdays. If you are dining by yourself, this is a comfortable place to go. This is a local chain of bustling neighborhood hangouts for daily brunch plus weekday lunch in a hip, funky setting. This one has a fabulous patio in the back. If visiting in the summer, ask if they can set you outside. The food is creative, well-prepared and delicious. Chicago is known for its hot dogs and you can get a great classic hot dog here, as well as great French fries. They also have cheeseburgers, turkey burgers, a veggie burger and more. But, if you have never had a Chicago-style hot dog, when you order one, please don't ask them to put catsup on it (sacrilege). You can get a good meal here relatively inexpensively.

Fat Chris serves Detroit-pizza. It's baked in an auto pan and has crispy cheese edges, with a slightly sweet tomato sauce. They also offer hand-tossed pizzas, strombolis, and calzones, as well as pepperoni rolls, parmesan breadsticks, and cheesy sticks. The prepared house and Caesar salads are not my favorite. Dessert offerings are two strudels and cinnamon sticks (both made using their pizza dough). This place appears to do more carry-out than dine-in business. Fat Chris offers a lunch buffet which offers an all you can eat pizza bar, salad bar, and a fountain drink for $11. They will make custom pizzas for you for the pizza bar on request.

Fantastic Lincoln Square Italian gem -- Enjoy friendly service and well-prepared food. It's BYOB so get a bottle of Sangiovese in advance to pair with the soft grilled polenta topped with the chunky house ragù. The housemade tricolored rotolo is my favorite pasta there. It is stuffed with ricotta and spinach and then baked. Yummy!. Reservations are taken only for parties of four or more. This busy restaurant offers plant-forward dishes in a casual space. They offer a range of comfort fare: nachos, flatbreads, house-made pastas, wings and and a number of veggie-focused dishes (thumbs up for the grilled sweet potatoes with pecan pesto) and hefty salads. A block north of the Square, Elizabeth is in an unassuming storefront. Chef Iliana Regan’s food, however, belies the modest location. there’s a single tasting menu each night, and she offers beer pairings, in addition to wine and nonalcoholic pairings, plus a cocktail list. You can reserve and prepay for dinner online or you can also just call to reserve a table. Elizabeth offers “new gatherer” cuisine, which means Regan forages for many of the ingredients she uses and grows many others. She changes menus every season and also has special theme nights (e.g., Game of Thrones) which are expensive but completely creative and worth the money!

Entertainment & Activities

Chicago has a wealth of entertainment options for you to explore. It has an exceptionally active music scene and theater community. Note: Photos here are automatically added by Airbnb and I have no control over what their computer chooses to display.
We have volunteered here almost weekly since 1998 – one of our favorite places in Chicago (we got married in their smaller concert hall). They offer concerts and dance shows almost every week (many kinds of music). The School also offers classes and workshops year-round in the largest community school of the arts in the U.S.! Founded in 1957 in the Old Town neighborhood, OTSFM has been in Lincoln Square since 1997. It's WONDERFUL!

Getting Around

We are about a 1/2 mile walk to the Ravenswood Brown line stop on the CTA (at Damen) and about a mile west of the Lawrence Red Line on the CTA. The Lawrence bus (#81) and the Clark bus (#22) are easily accessible. But, you can also take the Metra downtown or ride it north to Evanston or even to Kenosha! Or, go green and rent a bike! For details on Metra and Divvy, see below:
The Ravenswood stop (Union Pacific North) is a block south. It's a 14-minute ride downtown (2 stops). Buy tickets on the train after boarding from the conductor, but go to the ticket office downtown for a return ticket. If you buy it on the train to Ravenswood, you pay a $5 convenience fee in addition to the cost of your ticket for each ticket! In the summer, take this train north to Ravinia where they host symphony, pop, jazz, country, and Americana concerts most nights. You can picnic on the lawn or eat at one of their restaurants. Tickets for concerts should be purchased in advance as shows often sell-out, even for the lawn. Special Ravinia train prices are available from the conductor.

The Lincoln Square, Ravenswood and Andersonville neighborhoods have a number of unique stores. There is a press here to live locally, including shop locally. We encourage you to patronize our locally-owned businesses. They help to create the character of our three great neighborhoods. Our list covers a wide range of stores. Caution: As neither William nor I ever shop for women's clothing, we did not include women's clothing stores on this list as we can't vouch for their quality.

Amy has a great collection of candy--hard-to-find old-fashioned candies, a variety of imported candies, and amazing candies produced in-house. My absolute favorite though is the OMG Bar. So good and such a taste-treat in your mouth. William and I loved it so much we had Amy make smaller versions to include in gift bags for those who came to our wedding! Oh, and there is a nice assortment of super-premium ice creams (from Wisconsin), too. Amy adds a malted-milk ball on top to ice cream in a cup as a little extra treat. Tip: If you love chocolate, order the Zanzibar (made with three kinds of cocoa) -- it is delicious, rich and fudgy!
