The trail that gets you closest to the sign actually drops you behind the sign, but most trails in Griffith Park will get you a decent view. Or you can drive to Griffith Observatory and get a distant view of the sign or take a guided tour of Hollywood where the tour buses usually take you to a point where you can take a photo.
