Zoo
“Some of these animals have been rescued and cannot return to the wild. They also have raised Wood Bison and others to be released. Its very nice getting up close and personal with the animals on sight. This is a favorite for visitors as well as locals.”

“It is a beautiful drive out there but a pit pricey to actually get on the ice but very worth it. ”

“There is a trail on the right-hand side IMMEDIATELY after the tunnel. It is kinda hard to see the road to turn on. You can also see the glacier on the Anchorage side of the tunnel from the visitors center”

“You can’t drive to Whittier without going through the tunnel. North America’s longest tunnel at 2.5 miles. It is shared with the railroad and has scheduled vehicle usage. Check schedule on website.”

“This is our mainstream, contemporary grocery store with an attached liquor store. In Alaska you have to purchase your beer, wine and liquor in a separate store - usually attached to a grocery store.”

“Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner options....one of the more "affordable" options in town. For breakfast - every meal is able to feed two or three people, so if you know how to share, that is definitely the only way to go to save money....as well as avoid a food coma.”

Point of Interest
“This is one of the most beautiful day trip hikes in Whittier! Since the trail starts in Whittier you'll have to coordinate your time with the tunnel travel. You can find the tunnel times online. This trail has a beautiful view for the short distance up! You can either determine to go to the top and down to the glacial lake, or just take in the scenery. In mid summer this is a spectacular spot for blueberry picking. ”

“Byron Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers near Anchorage. Located in Girdwood, the Byron Glacier Trail is an easy one-mile hike along Byron Creek to the face of the glacier. With everything to do in Girdwood year-round, you can easily make a memorable day of it.”

Lodging
“Long Rifle Lodge is within walking distance of our cabin. They have an excellent restaurant and bar, with a stunning view of the Matanuska Glacier. Both our cabin and the lodge were built in the 1970s, with help from the same creative neighbors, so you will see similarities in the woodwork. Long Rifle Lodge serves great burgers, burritos, and has vegetarian options. The lodge is decorated with the widest variety of taxidermied Alaskan animals that you will probably find on your trip to Alaska - great for taking selfies! They do close early, so do not wait til late in the evening to go there. ”

Restaurant
“The most affordable food option in town. Portions are very reasonable for the price. The halibut sandwich is the most bang for one's buck as far as a halibut meal is concerned. I like to order the chicken bacon ranch sandwich or the calamari basket. ”

“Best view in town (from a bar) Prices are lower than the Mermaid. Food is not the greatest, but if you stick to appetizers, it should be ok.”

“Super economical, all-american....SUMMER....food options. It is very to "create your own" potato basket at a very reasonable price. My order: small fries topped with pulled pork, fried egg, fried onions/peppers....add whatever sauce you like from their selection.”

“Everything is good, eclectic McCarthy cuisine. Ask for your meal "over fries" or "over greens" for gluten free options. If it's slow and your feeling adventurous, ask for a "surprise over fries/greens" and let the chefs cook you a unique meal. ”
