Waar je zult verblijven

Newcastle upon Tyne, Verenigd Koninkrijk

The location is very central but it is also very quiet. Summerhill Square is an attractive green oasis within Newcastle city centre and consists of large 4-5 storey period houses (dating back to the early 1800's) surrounding a small public park and a community owned Bowling Club. Summerhill is the largest surviving urban fragment of Newcastle's early 19th century expansion outside of the city walls and it became popular with wealthy industrialists and merchants who moved away from the then overcrowded and polluted city centre and quayside. Despite being relatively small Summerhill Square has been home to numerous nationally, and internationally renowned figures including writers, musicians, social campaigners and politicians. Perhaps it's most famous resident was Robert Stephenson, son of George Stephenson (known as the 'father of the railways'). Robert has been the called the 'greatest engineer of the 19th century' and is best known for building the Rocket locomotive (Stephenson's Rocket) and for designing the magnificent High Level Bridge in Newcastle, the world’s first combined rail, road and pedestrian bridge. Summerhill Square recently featured in the 2019 BBC TV documentary series ‘A House Through Time.’ In the programme Tyneside born historian and presenter David Olusogo uncovered the amazing 200 year history of the residents of 5 Ravensworth Terrace.

These days Summerhill is best known for its attractive and well preserved 19th century housing and it is regularly visited by groups on organised walking tours of the city. It is also known for its strong sense of community and a charity set up by residents known as the Summerhill Trust which organises numerous community events and activities. The community owns much of the open space in the Square and the Trust hosts a community cafe and garden, allotment and orchard (as well as keeping bees). The community owned and run Bowling Club (once frequented by the cricketer W G Grace and once regularly used by Newcastle United's famous centre forward from the 1950s, Jackie Milburn) is rentable for events, meetings and parties and has even become a popular wedding venue.

Hi, we are a married couple in our mid 50’s with four grown-up children. Our three boys have all graduated and no longer live at home, so we currently share our home with our 19 year old daughter, Betsy who is in her first year of studying Psychology at Newcastle University. Betsy will also be leaving home in the summer to move into a shared student house. Graham is a Professor of Architecture at Newcastle University. Carla trained as a fashion designer and ran her own babywear design and manufacturing business before concentrating on bringing up the kids and being a registered child minder. She then worked for an English language school for 10 years as a student accommodation officer. Carla was also a director of a local charity for 8 years but retired in 2017. We both have a passion for making things!
