The nearest pub, the Samson Inn, is a few minutes walk away ... about 300 yards, serving real ale and meals. There are a number of other pubs and restaurants within a four mile radius.
The Roman wall lies just yards away ... The cottage is within the zone of the site of the scheduled monument ! The Hadrian's Wall National Trail passes about 50 yards away. It is also only a mile and a half away where the Pennine Way National Trail joins the Hadrian's Wall Trail and they overlap for the next 10 miles or so heading west. The Roman visitor sites of Birdoswald (other side of Gilsland about 2 miles away), The Roman Army museum (3miles), Housesteads, Vindolanda (both ~8miles) and Chesters (~16miles) are all short driving distances away. The walking in the area is superb either on sections of the Wall or the countryside and along the rivers Irthing or South Tyne. Several circular walks are possible straight from the cottage.
Haltwhistle Golf course is only a mile away and at least 5 other courses within 20 mile radius.

Hilary and I live in the countryside of northern England overlooking Hadrian's Wall. We both like the open air and countryside, spending a lot of time in our garden and in my case undertaking property maintenance and tinkering with cars, though I am always happy to be interrupted to play or watch football !
