Lo Spirito Libero is located in an unspoilt rural area that has a view over one of the most picturesque valleys between the border of Lazio and Umbria. Nature is at your fingertips. There are hills, olive groves, woods and green fields as far as the eye can see under the protective gaze of Mount Soratte to the west. Lo Spirito Libero is surrounded by beautiful secluded places with ancient Roman ruins; Romanesque churches and the St. Francis Route which travels from Assisi to Rome.
Lo Spirito Libero has four different apartments. We offer our guests the tranquillity of authentic Italian experiences when you visit this peaceful little village so far away from the hectic life of the city. The Sabina area was already known to the Romans who built their summer villas here away from the oppressive heat of the Eternal City. Thanks to the mild climate, the generosity of the sources and the fertility of the territory we have a wonderful area for you to come and sample.
We are keen to conserve our environment, thus we are using alternative energy sources for our homes and we invite our guests to use the recycling bins provided: a small contribution to respect the beauty of nature that surrounds us. Wi-Fi is available throughout.

Mezzodì is disposed on two levels with a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, lounge and a bedroom with bunk beds. It can accommodate 4 guests. This apartment is on the same level as the garden, which is accessed from the kitchen window-door. A cosy terrace with table and chairs under the shady branches of a beautiful tree is reserved for our guests to enjoy relaxing moments outdoors with panoramic views and easy access to the resort pool.

You can ride along the unspoilt countryside trails that surround our accommodation in complete safety, accompanied by equestrian-, environmental- and tourist- guides. We offer riding lessons for beginners or whole day rides for the more experienced rider. The paths that branch off from our village are different depending on the ability of the riders’, we can reach pleasant hermitages in the mountains, archaeological sites or areas of natural interest in the rolling hills of northern Lazio and Umbria. Our tours involve several types of premises in order to provide benefits to the small rural reality in which we live. We stop at farms and taste the local produce and we will take you to the most unknown sites where we will reveal the history of the places. We are able to organize tailor-made tours for our guests, mapping the par course and travelling together in order to share the experience of a journey on horseback with you.
The Sabine countryside and the mountains can be reached on foot or mountain bike from our nature trails. Along the way you have the chance to visit unknown hidden medieval villages, naturalistic and archaeological sites with a guided tour service in Italian and other languages on request. The important St. Francis Route can be reached directly from Lo Spirito Libero and you can walk several tracks of the “Cammino di San Francesco” by taking advantage of the drop-off and pick-up service we offer to and from several stages of the route beyond those close to us. This territory has been very important in the Roman period and the Middle-Ages, thus embedded in nature you will discover Roman ruins, Romanesque churches and hermitages. During the excursions we involve local businesses including farms and artisans to promote a form of responsible tourism that brings well-being to the people of the region. You can choose a local produce tasting tour or visit local artisans with us.
Food and Wine
History teaches us that the ancient Romans chose to abduct the Sabine women both for their beauty and for their cooking skills, nothing is more true in a fertile land, although sometimes a land that can be hard and hostile. In our villages you can still see women with fagots to light the fire in the oven to make bread at home. The hills are dotted with free ranged cows, the mountains with sheep and goats, the silvery- green leaves of the olive trees give a different tone to the already rich palette of green countryside of the Sabine. This is a land of colours and intense flavours. Nothing could be more natural for an authentic culinary journey. In our house you have the opportunity to participate in activities related to the cultivation of the land of the harvesting of olives to produce oil. You can visit the local mills and of course taste this product with a PDO in Sabina, but you can also collect the vegetables from our garden to cook with to make authentic traditional dishes. We visit local farms to taste the cheese, wines and gifts that nature provides to our country people. We create tailor-made itineraries for our guests so they can "enjoy" the full essence of Sabina.
History and Culture
Lo Spirito Libero is ideally situated between Lazio and Umbria. From here you can visit both the artistic cities surrounding us in Rieti, Orvieto , Viterbo, Assisi , Perugia and Rome or the hermitages along the paths of faith in Greccio and other local villages . A few steps from us, Roman villas are hidden inside Romanesque buildings like St. Peter at Centum Muros Church in Montebuono and Santa Maria di Fianello. There are also the ruins of the important Roman river town of Otricoli, the Roman Villa of Cottanello and the powerful abbey of Farfa. In our area lived the Etruscans and the Romans who have left significant artefacts in their villas, baths and necropolis but to name a few. Centuries’ later powerful noble families embellished their sumptuous residences with magnificent Renaissance gardens at Villa d' Este in Tivoli and the Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola.

Mother Nature has been generous in Sabina with its fertile hills. The steep mountainous areas have made sure that human impact is minimal, thus you will visit a pristine area where man and nature are in harmony. The respectful farming makes sure that many wild plants and insects like fireflies (which in other places are now gone) still thrive. This area has much to offer those who want to
