The Mill Cottage is nestled in a secluded valley in the NYM National Park. Only a few miles from the beautiful market town of Helmsley, this is the perfect retreat for ramblers and cyclists, or those just wanting to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the countryside. There is a kitchen, shower room and open plan living/dining/sleeping area with two single beds. The cottage is warmed by log burner and radiator.

There are cats, chickens and sheep on the main property - so sorry, no dogs.

De ruimte
This is a beautiful converted barn with high, beamed ceiling. While you are in a peaceful valley, you will still be able to stay in touch with the outside world or simply catch up on the latest Netflix offerings via our wifi.

The cottage is surrounded by fields where the only noises you will hear are likely to be birds (including several owls), sheep and the running of the mill race leading up to the waterfall.

"This is one of those secret little dales that reward a walker who keeps off the beaten track. It is a sort of Doone valley, utterly shut off from the rest of the world. A little stream runs through the wooded ravine and the old Mill is the only house in the whole dale. In the old days the Mill ground all the corn for the surrounding farms, and the old cart-tracks are the only roads to it." From "Striding Through Yorkshire" by Alfred J. Brown, first published 1938.

"A byroad from Old Byland leads to the secluded valley of Caydale (or Yowlassdale), with its solitary stone house, once a flour mill and now a private residence. It is a little dream-world flanked by woods, with the great mass of Easterside Hill beyond. In spring and summer it is a paradise of wild flowers." From "Fair North Riding" by Alfred J. Brown, first published 1952.

Waar je zult verblijven

Old Byland, Engeland, Verenigd Koninkrijk

The Mill Cottage is unrivalled for peace and tranquility and on a clear night, there is a superb view of the night sky. Deer regularly walk through the property so it is likely you will see one during your stay.

With immediate access to a footpath and bridleway, we are the perfect stay for those wishing to experience the Yorkshire countryside. There is onsite parking just outside the cottage.

The small picturesque market town of Helmsley is only a few miles away. Helmsley is an historic town with a castle, walled gardens, spa hotel facilities, heated outdoor swimming pool (summer only), pubs, cafes and restaurants including a micro brewery. There is also a wide choice of traditional pubs in surrounding villages.

The accommodation offers an open plan living / dining / sleeping area with a cosy wood burner for extra warmth in the winter months. The kitchen includes a hob, combination oven/ microwave, toaster, kettle, and fridge with freezer compartment. In addition to the log burner, there is a radiator, and underfloor heating in the kitchen and bathroom areas. The bathroom has a shower cubicle, toilet (with macerator unit) and washbasin. The living area has two sofas, a TV with stand, and a coffee table. The dining area has a wooden table with four chairs. The sleeping area has two single beds (one of which can be extended to a double if needed), wall lights, and two bedside cabinets with lamps. There is some drawer storage under the beds. The living / dining areas have new flooring (2019) and the sleeping area is carpeted (2019).

We are popular with walkers and cyclists wanting to explore North Yorkshire - we are within easy reach of the North Yorkshire coast for Whitby, Staithes, Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay.
The White Horse at Kilburn and the stunning views (the “Best view in England”) of Sutton Bank are just a few miles away.
York – voted Britain’s most popular city - is less than 25 miles away and Harrogate with its famous spa water is 35 miles away.
The famous Bettys shops and cafés can be found in both York and Harrogate, and there is also a shop/café in Northallerton (18 miles away).
The picturesque steam railway from Pickering to Whitby crosses “Heartbeat country”, and goes through Goathland station which many will recognise as “Hogsmead” station from the Harry Potter films.

Bed linen and towels are provided. There is also a small welcome pack to help you settle in which includes items such as tea, coffee, milk and sugar.

We live in the main house across the stream and look forward to welcoming you to the Mill Cottage.
