Brue View is a self-contained annex adjoining River House at the end of a quiet lane in the village of Meare on the Somerset levels. Dating back to 1836 the property is built into the bank of the River Brue which cuts through the levels and eventually meets the Bristol Channel at Burnham on Sea. From your own private deck and garden you can relax and enjoy your favourite tipple while looking out for the abundance of wildlife that count the river and surrounding farmland as home – in the midst of three nature reserves we are lucky to count herons, swans, great egrets, ducks, cows, sheep, kingfishers and many more species of wildlife as our neighbours.
A short 3 mile drive (or walk along the river bank) will get you to the town of Glastonbury with its Tor, Abbey and abundance of history that dates back to the mystical Isle of Avalon and tales of King Arthur! 10 minutes away is the small town of Street where Clarks Villageis a great venue for high street bargains while England’s smallest city, Wells with its Cathedral, Bishops Palace and Market Square is just 9 miles away. More information on the village, its history and surroundings can be found on the Village websitewhere you will also find details on the last remaining medieval monastic fish house in the country that can be seen in the field directly opposite us Abbott of Glastonbury Fish House
Brue View is approached via the main drive to River House which you will find at the end of Porters Hatch (BA6 9SW for Sat Nav.) Parking for two cars is available directly outside the entrance to the property where you will also find a secure, private garden that leads you to the private decking area. There is also a small patio area with table and chairs for a little al fresco dining should you choose.
The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering and contains a washing machine, dishwasher, fridge, oven, Nespresso machine and oven. There are a number of local farm shops close by as well as all the major supermarkets Glastonbury and Street for you to pick up everything you need for your stay.
Both the lounge and bedroom have double patio doors that open inwards giving stunning views across the levels to the mendip hills and allow you to look down into the river itself and watch the fish meander their way upstream! Heating is provided throughout by electric radiators and a flame effect fire in the lounge while the shower room benefits from excellent water pressure and has its own tank that ensures a constant supply of hot water for those morning wake ups!
There are numerous walks to the nature reserves that can be seen on the local mapwhile information on what to expect when you get there is provided for all the reserves by the Avalon Marshes Visitors Centre. We are also fortunate that a beautiful walk across the fields to the village of Lower Godney will lead you to an award winning pub The Sheppeythat always delivers high quality food, an ever changing range of local ales, extensive gin menu and an amazing range of organic wines making it worth the walk! Like us, the pub is dog friendly and even carries a range of organic dog beer!
A stay at Brue View will appeal to a wide range of people from bird watchers and nature lovers for the Starling Murmurations to dog walkers and country lovers alike. A romantic break or family visit, whatever your reason for visiting us, we look forward to welcoming you and sharing our little piece of the world with you!
