North Lincolnshire, Engeland, Verenigd Koninkrijk

Appleby is a small picturesque village in North Lincolnshire lying about 5 km to the north-east of Scunthorpe, straddling the B1207 – the historic Roman Road of Ermine Street which once ran directly from London to York. The village nestles on the dipped slope of a limestone escarpment that falls gently towards the River Ancholme to the east. Appleby is close to many other attractions in the village of Broughton is St Mary’s Church which dated from 1066, although the tower is possibly earlier, giving evidence that there has been a centre of Christian worship in Broughton for over 900 years at least. That worship continues to this day with regular weekly services and other services for festivals and special occasions.
Brigg is a quaint little market town primary functions have remained unchanged down the centuries - a safe place to cross the River Ancholme and a forum for buying and selling goods and services. Back in the 11th century the only crossing was by wading through a ford where the river was just a few feet deep, near the site of what is now the Lidl store. A very small settlement was clustered near the crossing point. The first recorded reference to the county of Lincolnshire was in 1016 but the ancient territory of Lindsey, of which Brigg was part, existed as an entirely separate entity. In the village of Scawby is Scawby Hall is a Grade 1-listed, Jacobean manor house that was first begun by Richard Nelthorpe (1569-1640) in 1603 and has been lived in by members of the Nelthorpe family ever since. The house has been expanded and remodelled by successive generations. In 1792, upon the sale of Baysgarth Hall in Barton-upon-Humber, Scawby Hall became the main residence in Lincolnshire of the Nelthorpe family.
