Spirit of the Rainforest is nestled in the hinterland of the Nambucca Valley, half way between Sydney and Brisbane. We are 12 kms or 15 minutes drive from the Historic verandah post town of Bowraville & 1 hour or 70 km South of Coffs Harbour. 25 minutes off the M1 at Macksville or Nambucca .The Shed is nestled on 100 acres of farmland and is also a Designated Land for Wildlife Property.

De ruimte
32 years back, Julie and Nick made a big move from the bustling Central Coast in search of a more peaceful country/coastal lifestyle to raise a family, with room for horses and growing a Rainforest. They came across an old 100 acre dairy farm in the hinterland of the Nambucca Valley and quickly relocated to this place of natural mystic surrounded by lush forest valleys and mountains. With a big vision of regenerating the property into a wildlife/habitat/human haven, they got busy creating lush rainforest gardens and wildscapes, planting out gullies and ridges with native rainforest plants, bushtucker gardens, planting a Davidson Plum orchard and collecting/growing local rainforest species to regenerate our land and others.

Spirit of the Rainforest is one of those magical places that will make you feel like you are home in nature, naturally. The peaceful energy of the land invites you in to slow down, reconnect with the natural rhythm of nature, with the sun, moon, trees, birds and all the wildlife and birds who have made this place home.

On November 8th 2019, unprecedented bushfires ravaged through SOTR and our community in South Arm. Our home and accomodation survived, however our farm and 34,000ha of forests, habitat and wildlife were decimated.

As passionate stewards of this land, we have been working non stop to rebuild, revegetate and regenerate. We are proud to be a Designated Land for Wildlife property which has credited our dedication to our growing extensive local rainforest/garden plantings and native eucalypt gullies.

This previously created corridors for the diverse species of fauna, flora , birds, wallabies and other native animals that either live here all year round or visit us on a seasonal basis. We are working once again towards creating wildlife corridors and biodiverse habitats with future generations in mind...

A lot has changed at SOTR since the fires, yet there is still immense beauty in landscape, with the forests flushing with green growth and the strong diversity of birds and frogs apparent. The magic is still here and we can’t wait to share it all with you.

At SOTR it is easy to tune into the slow rhythm of the Australian bush, take in the intimate sounds of nature and disconnect from everyday distractions like WIFI/TV. SOTR is the perfect environment for couples and solo adventurers who wish to recharge, reconnect and reinvigorate new energy with each other and yourself in nature.

There are several walking trails leading to observation photography spots overlooking waterlily clad dams, valley vistas and views scattered around the property where you can bird and wallaby watch, pat a horse or feed the cows. Bring your own bikes to enjoy miles of picturesque open country roads and or run the same tracks til your hearts content.

We are lucky to have magnificent National Parks in our local area such as Dungirr (Koala), Gumbaynggirr and Yariabini which home incredible old growth rainforest and vulnerable species like koala, yellow bellied gliders, spotted quoll and many more.

World Heritage Dorrigo National park is 1 hour drive away and is perfect for a day trip. SOTR is located only 35 minutes from our pristine coastlines showcasing insatiable surfing spots and secluded beaches and National Marine Parks like Solitary Islands and South West Rocks (both excellent scuba diving) and Scotts Head. One of the beauties of staying at SOTR is the ability to chill out at the farm, spend the day wandering around our nearby sub-tropical rainforests or go surfing at our favourite beaches (or do all 3!). SOTR is a great base to explore the area or to take it as easy as you desire.

Switch off, chill out at our NO WIFI haven. We are a rural property 12 kms from town and shops . There are Mobile phone service in spots on the farm and landline service if need be.
The Shed is suited for couples or small families wanting to self cater meals for stays minimum 1 night. Children welcome but can sleep on sofa or camp outside if old enough under the stars. Bring your own bedding for kids or can be supplied at extra cost.

The Shed is an open planned space and simply furnished with our favourite artwork and antique Australian furniture. You will love creating delicious meals in the modern stainless steel kitchen, and chilling out in the spacious and dining area or outdoor undercover BBQ entertainment area.
Put on your favourite tunes and sink into the comfy lounges with one of our favourite reads from the library. The Shed has expansive glass windows, capturing views and light in all hours of the day and night and weather.

The adjoining double bedroom and spacious bathroom provide a cosy space for solitude and seclusion. The kitchen in The Shed is complete with a fridge and freezer, gas cooktop, electric oven and kettle as well as essentials like tea, coffee, sugar, salt and olive oil. It is a good idea to stock up on supplies at our local produce supermarket in Bowraville or in Macksville or Nambucca Heads.

A large undercover chill-out zone adjoins The Shed where you can enjoy a strong morning brew, observe the diverse birdlife and take in the blissful morning/afternoon chorus of birds breathing in fresh country air. We hope you enjoy this awesome space!

Jaliigirr (meaning ‘Tree’ in the local Gumbaynggirr dialect) is the second bedroom adjoining The Shed. Jaliigirr is a beautiful space with a queen bed and large glass windows looking out through the palms towards the mountains and eucalyptus forests. The bathroom is dreamy and the spacious lounge area is perfect for lazing around, meditating or reading a book.

It has a covered deck out the front where you can enjoy the morning and afternoon sun. We recommend keeping it simple and picking up some fresh local produce, snacks and provisions at our local supermarkets . If you prefer to eat out - the Bowra Pub in Bowraville has a delicious menu, plus some great dining options in Macksville and Nambucca.

Andere dingen waar je op moet letten
Precious places are increasingly rare in the world. We are privileged to be nestled in an incredibly diverse valley that homes bushland, rainforest, creeks, farmland, rivers, mountains and pristine coastline. However, it wont stay this way forever without the thoughtful efforts of locals and visitors combined.

Rainforests world wide are under threat from climate change, development and largely, ignorance. While there is a case for the growing of rainforest species outside of their natural area, a primary need for rainforest conservation is the growing of species natural to a particular area and the growing of these species in a ecologically ‘friendly’ way. We have an expertise and passion in this area and will be happy to share our knowledge of this .

We have adapted our lifestyle to be as low impact on the environment as possible. In keeping with our eco-friendly philosophy we ask that you respect and embrace our sustainable practices by limiting your water use at SOTR and always lead with reduce, reuse, recycle (and refuse single use plastics!).

A percentage of your stay will be used to continue to nurture, plant and conserve ur designated land wildlife and for our future generations.
We are supporting an important local campaign for the Great Koala National Park (developed by National Parks NSW) - a koala reserve designed to protect 315,000ha of public land in the Coffs Harbour Region This land is a biodiversity hotspot for two nationally recognised koala meta-populations and many threatened species. If you are interested we will provide more information.

We encourage you to soak it up, fall in love with the place, slow down, relax and tread lightly.

The Nambucca Valley is an incredibly beautiful and diverse region in Gumbayngirr country, where we are so grateful to share our homeland. Our expansive backyard is home to ancient Gondwana rainforest, pristine surf coastlines (an annual migration route for the Humpback whale), intricate river systems, stunning estuary environments, extensive mountain ranges, lush farmlands, fine quality fresh produce, and excellent people.
We are blessed with an idyllic temperate climate, one of the most liveable climates in the world.
People are captivated by the beauty off the area and return with their families year after year for holidays after visiting the Nambucca Valley.
Our closest town Bowraville12 kms away is known affectionately as the 'the Verandah Post Town', and historically as the 'heart' of the valley. The Bowraville Folk Museum and restored Bowraville Theatre are beautiful places to visit and step back in time.

The perfect half-way spot between Sydney and Brisbane and only 1 hour drive from Coffs Harbour airport - it is guaranteed you will slow down, recharge and reinvigorate after spending time at SOTR and the Nambucca Valley.

We are usually on the property during your stay, our house and gardens are private and is situated overlooking the property. Your access to your accomodation is seperate to ours. The idea of SOTR is to get away from the hustle and bustle, chill out in a unique and secluded place and indulge in the nature and wildlife that surround you. With this in mind we want to give you as much freedom and privacy to do your own thing with as much or as little interaction with us as possible. We love telling people about our home and gardens and animals and travels.

You will have all the information that you need to enjoy your stay at SOTR. Everything will be within a folder on arrival including house rules, dining options, maps of the area, maps of trails to wander through the farm, best views/photography spots at SOTR and all of our favourite places to visit in the area.

If you are staying longer, consider doing a guided 1 day Rainforest/Mountains/Beach/Bush adventure with us where you can really dig your toes into our extended backyard! This special package incorporates a special selection of National Parks, bush walks, our secret beach spots, bush-tucker experiences at SOTR, ancient rainforest wanders, forest conservation efforts and ‘on country’ cultural experiences.b
