Be prepared for the unusual. Experience what's like to sleep on a boat. It's like camping, only better and with AC. Berthed in a quaint little marina tucked in the Rhodes River leading to the Chesapeake Bay, this is an adventure you won't easily forget.

De ruimte
Ideal for love birds or solo adventures, my Lippincott 30 sailboat will allow you to spend a few nights at the gate of the Chesapeake Bay. Berthed (or anchored) in a wonderful, family-owned marina, you will be charmed by nature's surroundings, the sounds of the river's edge, and the peacefulness of one of the greatest bodies of water anywhere in the world.

The boat itself is small (30 ft, LOA), yet comfortable for up to three regularly-sized people within the cabin. While you'll appreciate her wonderful mahogany-wood interior finish, if you consider yourself a tall person (over 6ft 3in), this may not be the place for you. But with her fully functional, onboard Air Conditioner, at least you won't sweat too much during those sticky summer nights (BTW, please shut down the AC unit when not aboard; let's save the planet together).

You can easily prepare a cup of espresso or tea, and cook a nice simple breakfast in the morning using the two-burner alcohol stove (similar to a camp stove). Watch the crisp sunrise while listening to classical music (or anything else you prefer) from the relaxing, on-board sound system. Grab a nice cold one from the electric refrigerator even if your suntanning from the cockpit.

The V-berth (V-shaped bed), with a forward hatch for air flow, allows for two people to sleep together, and I mean together, so I suggest you choose a partner with whom you're close. Nonetheless, if conflict arises, there is always the option to move into the not-for-the-fully-claustrophobic, aft quarter berth (back of the boat), or in the mid-ship settee, which converts into a double quarter berth. But really, the best thing is to get along :-)

If you must go at night, there is a real head (or toilette) by your private quarters forward. If you feel shy, however, then simply walk a few yards to the spacious, clean and comfortable marina bathrooms with a real shower and loo. In fact, I would much more appreciate it if the on-board head has little or no use during your stay. Think of it as an emergency outlet, as it would need to be pumped out at the nearby station.

The marina and surrounding area are truly a destination into themselves. Feel at home in an upscale neighborhood, where folks build homes with docks and views of the Bay that some of us can only dream of. Yet, people are kind and accommodating in exchange for a simple smile.

To conclude, please allow me to manage expectations. This is NOT a luxury hotel, but it is a clean, neat, well stocked with all the essentials, and active sailboat that will supply you with stories to tell your mates for years to come.

Aye aye, captain!

Toegang voor gasten
You're welcome to use the boat to sleep. However, you may not take her sailing. If you'd like to charter her, please visit "Boatsetter" to make arrangements. You may also utilize the marina showers and bathrooms just a few yards away (and yes, expect to walk about two minutes to reach the loo :-).

Andere dingen waar je op moet letten
Q & A:

Q: Is this boat for real?
A: Yes, this is the real deal. I do take Equinix for outings along the Chesapeake Bay as often as I can. But that unfortunately means only every other weekend or so. The rest of the time it's yours to enjoy.

Q: So I would actually like to sail her. May I?
A: I thought you'd never ask. Yes you may, but you will need to charter her for the day (or several days if you'd like). Please visit "Boatsetter" online to make arrangements directly with me. I'll be happy to give you a $50/sailing day discount to charter her.

Q. Should I bring towels and sheets? What about cooking utensils?
A. No, I will provide clean sheets for the berths, clean towels, shampoo, conditioner and soap. In the galley (kitchen), you will find basic stuff, such as pots and pans, a moka espresso coffee maker, a teapot, plates, bowls and silverware. However, you may want to bring spices, oil, and other basics. Feel free to pay it forward and leave non-perishables if you'd like.

Q: The head room in the cabin is very low. I feel I'm walking like a neanderthal. Will I be condemned to bowing my head during my stay?
A: No worries. The cabin headroom (6' 2") is low because this a cruiser designed as a racing boat. However, as long as you're 6 ft 2in tall or less, you will be able to walk within the cabin straight like a homo sapiens. Besides, walking with your head bowed is a sign or respect in many places around the world.

Q: What's in a name?
A: Equinox is commonly regarded as the instant of time when the plane of Earth's equator passes through the center of the Sun (Wikipedia). I always imagine myself sailing and aiming towards the sun, hence the appropriate name.

Q. OK, so what's the bathroom situation?
A. No worries, I can guarantee all will be good. There is a head (sailor talk for loo, or toilet), and even a shower and sink right by the v-berth (V-shaped bed). Not to be concerned, it is regularly pumped and cleaned. While these amenities can be tight, there is a regular bathroom at the Marina House open to my guests. In it, you can shower and, if you don't mind, go the loo there instead of on the boat. Really, please go the marina showers...please!

Q: Is there Wi-Fi on board?
A: Are you serious? Of course not. Explorers relied on the moon and the stars for centuries, surely you can get by for a few nights without the web. Besides, there is great cell phone reception.

Q: What motivates you to share a sailboat?
A: I spent a night on a boat as kid and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. I sort of want to give everyone the chance to feel like a kid again.

Q: C'mon, mate, you're in it for the money, aren't you?
A: I don't think that was a question, or at least not structured correctly. In any event, no, I'm not in it for the money. I do a nice living doing other things. I bought a boat in 2016 to learn how to sail. But the reality is that she spends most of her time idle. Now let me ask you a question, don't you believe that not using a sailboat is truly a shame? I thought you'd agree.

Q: OK, but aren’t you really doing this for the money?
A: Fair question, but no. My wife and I are two mid-life professionals currently employed in interesting companies. About 40% of the proceeds from Airbnb go straight back into improving the boat and hence the guest experience. Thanks to the extra cash, for example, I’ve been able to implement long-kept projects, rigging and chain plate maintenance, electrical system improvements, and constant deck and hull repairs. Yes, I do sail the boat and my eco-footprint is extremely low!

Q: What about the other 60%?
A: You're not an auditor, are you? Anywho, the rest of the income goes into solving the cost of maintaining and upkeeping the boat, such as the slip rent, engine maintenance and insurance. OK, and maybe I splurge on a nice set of sailing gloves once in a while :-)

Q. You do have a cleaning fee. Should I be expected to clean the boat anyway?
A. Well, kind of. I clean and disinfect the boat regularly before sailing and guests arrive anyway. However, just because I spend time doing the dirty work, doesn't mean that you can trash the little cruiser. In fact, I'd ask that when leaving, you take the garbage to the marina bins, and try to keep the galley and deck as clean as possible. I hope I'm not asking too much.

Q. What's the deal with you being a Superhost?
A. Well then, since you ask...I'm a Superhost because I'm relaxed about my guests despite having a full-time job of my own. However, I've come to be rather fond of that "title," and I don't appreciate when a guest leaves a review saying that the boat was rather small, or that the place was not what they expected (gee, there's only about 30 pictures). If a guest does not read the detailed description where I specify the exact distance to places, or the meticulous portrayal of the experience, or whatever, then their reviews should be kinder. I truly enjoy 5-star reviews. If there's something, anything you do not like while here, I beg you to let me know and I promise to do whatever I can to revert your perspective. You know what they say, communication is king.

If you've never been to a marina, you have no idea what you're missing. Sailors are a close knit bunch who tend to look after each other. It is really a wonderful community. Expect the same in this safe, beautiful, hidden marina. Furthermore, the surrounding neighborhood is an upscale community with windy roads, ideal for jogging or walking the dog.

I'm originally from Mexico. I went to school on the West Coast (Stanford University) and then to post graduate school in Washington, DC and Milan Italy. I now live in DC and work in the high tech industry. My wife works for an international environmental non-profit, and we have owned our current home since 2003. We are both ecologically conscious and easy-going. We have a wonderful, tiny and playful Bichon Frisè who IS a members of the family. In addition to being proud hosts (and I personally reply to each and every request), we also enjoy being Airbnb guests whenever we travel. And we do all this because we enjoy meeting new and interesting folks. We therefore look forward to getting to know you as well.
