The short story- 1. Go to Djerba! Do it. You will not regret it. (Stay for more than two days! 5 would have been great) 2. Stay here at Amines. His family are the most hospitable people we've ever met. 3. Learn the local languages. Pick up a few words and use them. Arabic and then French.(Hello: Selem or selemalacoom)(thank you: Shukrun)(sorry/excuse me: Samagh ni) 4. Go with the flow. Allow yourself to meet the locals and experience what they have to offer. You will not be disappointed. Resist strict schedules or overloading on expectations. 5. Try Omi's cous cous ;) 6. Food prices all over Djerba are delightfully low in comparison, if you are coming from Canada, US, and likely the west in general. The long story.(but not even, for if we could further illustrate this experience for you, we would.) (in this particular case, a thousand photos could not speak a single word which would inspire the feelings we felt during this trip). Initially we embarked on this journey to see one thing: Djerbahood((SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) it!), A beautiful area in Djerba where a maze of white stone walls are brought to life with street art, created by 50 known artists from around the world. The work highlights the natural beauty of the old village, playing off of the colours on doors bursting with character, and shapes of details in the architecture. We arrived to Djerba with this one expectation but are leaving with SO much more. Ultimately, we are leaving with something so priceless and profound that no amount of money or time could equate to it. We are leaving feeling a part of something larger: a family. Amine's place was absolutely incredible. From the moment we arrived we met amines baba(father) at a local cafe, collected the keys and then were given a ride to the apartment where we met Amines lovely niece, Nahawend. Amines family went out of their way from the start of our trip to seamlessly arrange accommodations for us, when an unexpected guest arrived with his family very sick, and in search of refuge, amines family offered to house them(days before our arrival) Not only did their family give to someone in need, but they also arranged for us to stay in another hotel. This was done so seamlessly that we did not realize the hotel room did not match the photos until we were fully checked in. The apartment was very clean, well kept, central, safe, and nicely decorated. We were checked in and then taken on a quick tour from babas friend, again out of the kindness of our hosts, around central areas on the island, including recommended places, like the souk(market). We did not spend much time in our apartment, as the real magic was in the human connections that formed in our brief two days on the gorgeous island. His family was beyond hospitable and really made us feel like part of the family. We feel as though we received...
