Welcome to Accolade Hostel & Retreat Campground:) Our product is a dream in the making:) We are working towards living and being 100% organic so please no shampoos, soaps or scented products unless organic and environmentally friendly as we care to make a difference by making a difference:) Thank you. Accolade Hostel and Retreat Campground history has survived through all the storms, recessions and all viruses this world has gone through:) Now with Covid-19 on the rise, makes us even more resilient, accountable, respectful, loving with empathy, compassion and a care to make the world a difference, assuring communication and safety always remains our top priority:) At Accolade Hostel & Retreat Campground, we provide secure, safe home away from home feeling with comfy, cozy, clean, cool, organic accommodation with our own 6 acre private beach on La Plage St Pierre is second to none:) Our ancestors thought me to never say no and a complaint is always an opportunity to become better and with that said, I love to think differently, organically with today’s education and technology this shall be what my youngest son JP recently said to me” that is epic daddy”:) Being epic to us is building for the future one day at a time, securing, reinvesting from the ground up with the skills and respect of our forefathers and today’s technology can create for our future generations to thrive and survive:) Accolade Hostel and Retreat Campground is in the industry to set standards straight and abide by them as our life depends on it:) We live to love and make a difference by protecting our family and clients, making them feel safe, secure with healthy mind, soul and a livelihood they can thrust:) We are what we see, eat, hear, and do at Accolade Hostel & Retreat Campground:) There is no difference between our life and business as it’s the same to avoid all confusion it is of necessity that we become one and only one kind of love, it’s unconditional and an everlasting love you will never forget:))) With organics and back to basics, aiming for zero target emission. establishing a world class retreat isn’t easy but we been doing it for a lifetime and the future of this world is all about a change for a better life and future for our children to enjoy and many generations to come:) I am of proud Acadian/Micmac/Irish and Scottish descendants that stem from the first original 6 cabins in the history of Canada in Cheticamp along the famous Cabot Trail in the world:) We were called Laurie’s Cabins built in 1938. My ancestry lived and originated from St Malo France working as privateers for King of France and mixed with First Nation to become Metis on one side of my family and my other side came from Scotland originally our name was MacKeown and became Mc Keown as they resettled and married in Ireland et voila that’s my heritage.. We come from the poor people and we are still are poor on both sides of my family, yet we we are rich in life as we live off the land and that’s the future of Accolade dream. Eventually we settled on this beautiful land of Acadia wrapped with pristine oceans, laced with streams, lakes and dreams to live and thrive in farming, hunting, fishing and building our future is now so crucial with pollution and global warming on the rise. Born, baptized & raised here in Cheticamp. Love life, thinking constructively, eco conscious, sustainability, reinvesting, rebuilding for the future with the storms getting stronger and Covid in effect can only make us stronger, resilient, mastering everything the world has learned and also failed to do. We know different and we together the good and the bad must reunite and make it better:) Accolade Hostel & Retreat Campground invites the world to see the difference by making a small change with ourselves now... Our upcycled centure old barn once a food supply barn for Sacred Heart Hospital that fed WW11 veterans over 90 yrs ago, was dismantled in 62 pieces moved aprox 4 Kms up along railroad at entrance to Gypsum Mine & reassembled with same nails to run 100 head cattle farm for aprox 40 yrs. There after transformed into a ground fishery building “the northern cod era”, later off shore, inshore crab and lobster. 10yrs ago I purchased the old abandoned barn the very same one I used to swing like Tarzan at age of 12 landing on a hay pile that was still there the day I purchased it:) At that particular time I had come home after being gone away back and forth 15 yrs in the exploration of oil, gas and minerals from the Canadian west coast, the northern remote area called Pink mtn border of B.C/Alaska, off shore Sable Island gas, thereafter to the fiords of Baffin Island, diamond coring for the second biggest Iron ore deposit in North America at 85% pure, citing through the tundra, deposit 1&2, railroad and port of call to load up freighters off a small island as the shore line depth was too shallow inland of Baffin Island. I began In the industry spring of 1997 as a labourer, cleaning up drill rigs, to knowing the very nuts and bolts and running gear of every drill rig, from the smallest to the biggest drill rigs in the world, singles, doubles, triples, horizontal & vertical drilling platforms to running every kind of machinery there was available:) Finally I met up with my grandfathers footsteps in Baffin Island working for BIM. For three years, I supervised 7 drills, 21 men, had three helicopters, three pilots, two sleds, with two Inuit snipers protecting us from 5 families of polar bears within a twenty five mile radius and depending on direction of wind they would be coming to hunt us:) The second year working out at BIM, I called mom and grandma her mom after being put in seniors complex due to her frail health. Grandma told mom that grandad was a machine operator at BIM when he was only 26 yrs old and built the very roads I was walking, driving and flying over everyday for six weeks at a time:)Wow:))) I came home after my season work was over in 2009 after being there in 2007, 2008, 2009 and the recession hit us hard and never returned. That fall I came home to a sick and dying family and with a mentality that I could never leave home again. From that moment with my very own eyes, heart and soul, torn apart, I watched helplessly my family die without being able to help them, dad died of cancer, grandma a stroke and grandpa of alzheimers with a broken heart from being place in a seniors home against his will:( During these three years, I watched one after the other die in front of me helpless so decided to salvage a WW11 historical barn, moved in butcher room to care for my 9 head of cattle, 3 draft horses with winds gusting up to 142 mph having the highest winds in the province. I patched up the old barn to protect my livestock investing every penny I had to make it what it is today:) After two years of farming, it nearly broke me physically, mentally and financially ando became more feasible to provide shelter for stranded tourist so I developed Accolade Hostel & Retreat Campground. Life isn’t always easy in this world. It’s what we make of it and dreams do come true if we work hard enough at it. Our priority is to keep it safe, simple, meaningful, thoughtful, intelligent, necessary, kind yet challenging enough to enhance fun enjoying life. We are building towards off grid organic retreat at its best. Keep it simple, make better choices, target zero carbon footprint, back to basics, organic & going off grid soon:) Come join us. Little things mean sooo much more when you have less. People eat to live and we live to eat making the best of what we have. Recycling, up-cycling, composting, re-purposing and bringing back the old to the new with a green thumb. We shall rise to the top together as one who cares about this world we live in. Our ancestry is what made Accolade all possible. Great for singles, couples, families, small groups, to bus tours. Private guiding, shuttle services available. Step back in time with sticks and stones, ice cold artesian wells, pristine nature on 25 acres farmland. We look forward to hosting your stay at Accolade Hostel Retreat Campground your home away from home. We have cleaning fee for groups 6 people and over:)Everything you ever thought of doing on the Island Accolade is the gateway to it all:))) Yours truly, Kevin John Mc Keown
