During the period 1933-1945, the Jewish people suffered catastrophe because of the crazy anti-Semitic activities of the Nazis in Germany. When many countries in the world refused to accept refugees, Shanghai opened the door for them. Nearly 30,000 Jewish refugees traveled across the ocean to Shanghai to seek relief during 1933-1941. At that time, most of the refugees lived in the Tilanqiao Area. Although they live a hard life, they set up a place for leisure and culture use. Then Tilanqiao Area became the “Little Vienna in the East”. In 1943, the Japanese authorities set up the Hongkou ghetto, and nearly 20,000 refugees were gathered in the detachment area of the Tilanqiao, Only about 5 square kilometers. After the Second World War ended, Jewish refugees mostly survived and most of them left Shanghai.
This route is mainly to show this history by visiting the traces left by the Jews in the Tilanqiao Area.

We will mostly visit the highlight spots in the Jewish Ghetto area, including Xiahai Temple which aimed at worshiping the city god, the White Horse Café and Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, to Zhoushan Road to see the architecture and we will introduce you how the Jewish lived here previously. Afterward, see the site of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee

Absolutely exceptional. Sherry is so kind, spunky, and personable. This honestly may be my favorite tour I’ve ever taken. We learned so much about the area and Shanghai history. We were also encouraged to meet others on the tour and all shared a drink at a coffee shop afterward. 5 stars. Would honestly go again. Thanks a million Sherry!

The whole tour experience is amazing! Although I have been living in Shanghai for years, this area is the place where I totally neglect. Before coming to the Jewish Ghetto tour, I didn't even know about this history of Shanghai. But after seeing the museum and those traces on the architectures left by the former residents, I couldn't imagine how many stories have taken place in this peaceful neighborhood today. The tour helped me to explore the other side of the modern Shanghai, and reminded me that even in my familiar city there are still many places for me to explore. Our guide Cherry is exceptional, she is very considerate and inspring, and she has her own thoughts on the places and travel. This is my first time joining a walking tour, and I'm totally in love with this kind of travel. I had very good time traveling with these fun people, and if Cherry have other tour I would love to join!
