Wat je gaat doen

I will present a history of Ukrainian eggs—a.k.a. pysanky. Pysasch—means to write in Ukrainian—you are not decorating an egg you are writing or creating a story.
We’ll cover how Ukrainian eggs started as an ancient craft & eventually evolved into the traditional Easter eggs that we know today.
Participants will be able & will be encouraged to ask questions throughout the workshop…not only on technique, but the history & culture of Ukrainian eggs.
As far as technique goes, I will show/help them draw or outline a design on the real chicken, duck, or goose egg that they choose to dye.
I will explain & demonstrate the wax resist technique that is used to create the Ukrainian egg & guide them through that process. The eggs are not painted; they are dyed using this technique, which is similar to batik. It’s truly a folk art that all people including children are able to create & appreciate.
The highlight for most students, towards the end of the process, is melting off a not so pretty layer of black wax in order to see their finished creation, an absolutely beautiful colorful egg.
It’s a lovely process & the workshop participants will be able to leave with their creation.

I have been studying art all my life. I have been an arts instructor teaching people about & how to create Ukrainian eggs for the last 23 years. I have taught hundreds of people this ancient craft. Furthermore, my Ukrainian eggs & I have been featured in many newspaper & magazine articles. Ironically, Ukrainian eggs (the original Easter eggs) are the most famous art/craft from my native country of Ukraine & even though I received my decorative arts degree in Ukraine, I did not learn about this art form until later in my adult life after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Had a wonderful time, a great way to spend a Sunday! I'd been wondering about pysanka ever since I saw it on an episode of Reading Rainbow on PBS over 25 years ago, but I never looked into it. Olga's incredibly experienced as a teacher and artist in general, and it was really interesting to hear her stories and just chat with everyone while we worked. There's just something about quietly working, sipping a drink, and chatting that's soothing - this is great if you enjoy experiencing "flow", as coined by Csikszentmihalyi. It'll take some practice to draw clean lines with the wax, but you'll be surprised by what you can make. Just come with a willingness to try something new and remember that everything takes practice! I decided to use a Japanese fabric pattern, and it came out quite well for a first egg. The process speeds up after the first couple of colors, and the patience will pay off - melting off the wax at the end is exciting! Olga stayed an extra 2 hours with me so I could finish; I bought a kit that included a kistka so I could continue at home, and next time I'd love to draw out a pattern and decide on the colors beforehand. The cafe/bistro is beautiful also! Loved the wooden interior.

I booked and answered on behalf of my mother who greatly enjoyed the experience. She had exposure to Ukrainian eggs as a child and never thought she would be able to make something which, I agree, was so beautiful. She was a bit nervous but Olga was very patient and my mother enjoyed the educational aspect as well as Olga's artistic style.
