This tour is an immersion into the heart of Jewish culture, inside the life in Venice in the 16th century. We will discover the dynamics of the ghetto, the rules that controlled and stressed the life of the Jewish communities in and out of it. We will walk in an area of the city which is full of charm and local quietness, a unique experience!
That of the Jews is a long and tormented history, made of great sorrows and loss, of isolation and persecutions. The bond between Venice and the Jews has to be searched in the most ancient centuries of our history. Venice represents a bulwark of hope for people that cannot find peace nor home in a 16th century where Spain, France and UK have already expelled the Jews from their territories. That’s why the city of Venice decides to isolate the Jews instead of expelling them.
This gesture, driven by clear economical interests and far from being connected to what we today call tolerance, in the Europe of those days surely represents a positive exception. This is the reason why we can define the Venetian Ghetto as a place of paradoxes, suspended between tollerance and discrimination. These interesting contradictions turned it into one of the most mysterious places of the city.

I’m Federico, a well read and well traveled guy from Northern Italy, based in Venice. I have a masters degree in art history and tourism and I've been working as a free lance tour guide in Venice for over 3 years now ;) After graduating from Ca’ Foscari University, I moved to Indonesia and Australia where I lived for 1.5 years, working in hospitality. I then decided to come back home in 2015 where I studied to become a tour guide and a tour leader.

This tour was a full immersion inside the history of Jewish people in Venice! We learnt the origins of the word "ghetto" and we had a walk in a charming quiet area of the city that we wouldn't have been able to find by ourselves! Highly recommended!
