Wat je gaat doen

(For reviews please also check my cycle tour “Reading the city with a historian“! Link in my profile.)
In 1900 Berlin has been what the “Silicon Valley” is today - the world’s major high tech hub. We will cycle through the working-class district “Wedding”, where modernity came into being with new products, a new architecture, and a new society. On our tour you will see one of the treasures of early modern architecture - the former AEG factory, designed by Peter Behrens in 1905. It was here that a “corporate design” was created for the first time, encompassing architecture, products and advertising in equal measure. We take a look at the buildings (Mies van der Rohe was also involved in designing this complex), and then we explore the former workers' neighbourhood. Here you can follow the phases of housing construction since the 1870s up the "cautious urban renewal" of the 1980s and modern architecture. We also see how the Cold War influenced the neighborhood, which was divided by the Berlin Wall. On our way we will pass by the last preserved WW2 air defense bunker and old 19th century factories which have been partly destroyed during the war and not completely rebuild yet. Finally, we take a look at the "Uferhallen" (a center for contemporary dance) in a former tram depot, a major work of expressionist architecture from the 1920s. (Bikes are not included.)
Other things to note
Please make sure that you have a bike on hand before we start :-)

If you would to walk, you can book this tour as a private tour.

Please contact me, if you have any questions on how or where to rent bikes! (I would recommend “Call a Bike”, you can find, book and pay the bikes with their app.)

Born in Western Germany I moved to Berlin after the wall came down in 1989 to study East European history. I did my research at the Humboldt University Berlin where I also received my PhD. I now work as a historian, journalist and photographer. I've written a couple of books – on Berlin's architecture (“Architekturgeschichte Berlins“), the Holocaust and German communism –, worked for a political think tank, and I am writing for several newspapers (the German “Frankfurter Allgemeine” and the Swiss “Neue Zürcher Zeitung“ among others). Because I enjoy to stroll through the city with people and to show them places off the beaten track (and to give them a new view on the well-known places), I have been offering tours for more than ten years on which I give firsthand insights into my research on history and architecture.

We will start our cycle tour at the Zionskirche, then we pass the Berlin Wall to the former “French sector” of West Berlin, we have to look at the Berlin tenant houses (“Mietskasernen”), the former AEG factory and one of the few pop out buildings in Berlin (1970s), the bunker in the Humboldthain park and some other places where you can still see traces of World War II.
