Wat je gaat doen
Join us for a walk in the Little Syria enclave and learn the history of how this neighborhood has changed since the Syrian refugee crisis. See first-hand how Syrians are making their mark here, discuss its relevancy to the global migration debate, and experience their world (including food!) for a few hours.
Depending on group interest you will:
-Enjoy the best falafel and manakeesh in all of Istanbul
-Discover local Syrian shops and goods
-Be able to point out Syrian shops on your own, while understanding the long trade history between Syria and Turkey
-Learn the difference between Turkish and Syrian coffee
-Eat lunch at a restaurant straight out of Aleppo
-Understand the legal, economic, housing, and social challenges facing the Syrian population
-Participate in a question and answer session directly with a refugee (subject to availability)
Please note that this is an informal walk and not a tour. You are simply joining us for an outing in Little Syria.
P.S. We were interviewed! https://www.ledevoir.com/vivre/voyage/560273/voyage-dans-le-petit-damas-turc
Other things to note
The Q&A with a refugee is done at the end of the walk and is subject to their availability

Shaza is a Syrian-American with a Masters degree in Urban Planning and International Development, and a focus on migration. She first arrived in Istanbul in 2015 for a volunteer trip to teach and mentor Syrian refugee students.
Since then, she stayed in Istanbul researching the integration of the Syrian population and the way it's changing the city's landscape, culture, food, and future.
Ahmad is a Syrian refugee who arrived in Istanbul 6 years ago. Since then, he's lived in Fatih and watched it change over the years. He also works in the humanitarian field and hosts his own Airbnb cooking class.
One of our favorite neighborhoods in all of Istanbul is Little Syria and we hope to make you just as passionate about it as we are!

A bit sad that we book a walk with Shaiza, and then we got a message it’s not her doing it. The tour was hosted by Ahmed, a refugee from Damascus. Really great guy, but I think he could give the guest a bit more info on what the plan is for the walk. A lot of it seemed very random, and several things did not work bc of ramadan. Rather than him telling us stuff, we had to ask him a lot of questions to get him to tell us. And fortunately, only a few of the guests turned up, because this would have been impossible with the ten people who had booked! We learned some interesting stuff from Ahmed, and he told us about his experience and life, but very little about the «big picture». This was his first time hosting this walk, but he seemed a bit uninspired, which was sad. I really like the concept, but the execution could have been quite a bit better, I think.

Shaza’s experience is really unique! She is very passionate about Syrian culture and food. We got to meet Syrian refugees and get a glimpse into their lifestyle in Turkey. I highly recommend this experience if you want to see a different side of Istanbul and try some delicious food along the way.
