Wat je gaat doen

Our unique course takes place around a huge farmhouse-style table in the centre of our family-run showroom surrounded by live wood burning stoves and Esse Range Cookers.
You will be welcomed by passionate bakers Miranda and Carol.

This is a hands on course.

After a cup of coffee and a handmade pastry you will get stuck in and weigh, mix, sift, shape, mould, stir, peel and much more. You will start off all the jam and jelly pans and roll your first batch of bread rolls.

You will knead a batch of white bread and brown or seeded by hand and another mechanically. You will make my signature focaccia using a fabulous traditional prove method.

You will learn to fold and roll the baguettes, rolls and loaves.

While the loaves prove you will pot the jams and curd and make a batch of savoury pastry for a tart for lunch. You will relax and eat lunch before making a sweet pastry to make a bakewell tart using the jam we have made. This is a secret recipe passed down from Miranda’s mother.

We will stop for lunch that you have made yourselves.

You will then bake all the loaves off before relaxing for a drink next door at our beautifully restored pub The Firehouse Somerset (where Miranda and Carol ran the pastry section) while the loaves and jam cool. You will go away confident that we have left no stone unturned in helping you on your lifelong journey making artisan bread & jam
Other things to note
This is an experience for all ages and abilities. We can tailor make this experience for beginner, intermediate or advanced cooks. We welcome children who are keen to learn and able to withstand a 4 hour course. We welcome people with disabilities. Small Dogs can sit under the table if well behaved.

I grew up in Somerset and have made bread and jam since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I am lucky enough to have lived in a home with an abundance of apples, crab apples, quinces, blackberries, runner beans, courgettes and tomatoes. Neighbours dropped fruit on our doorstep if they had an abundance of it and my mother turned every last bit into jam. I am passionate about using up anything and everything and if it can be made into a jam, chutney or curd, then I can assure you it will be! I came to making artisan bread later in life. I was invited to be an apprentice baker on a flour mill in Shaftesbury, for an incredible artisan baker. I hope to follow in his footsteps one day and become a master baker. In the meantime I intend to pass my bread and jam obsession on to the next generations, by making it fun and accessible and easy.

The experience takes place in our family-run Showroom at Sandpits Heating Centre. The warm, cosy and welcoming showroom is a family-run business that has been serving the wider local community for more than 50 years. It has woodburning stoves glowing, and Rayburns and Esse Range Cookers at the ready to simmer our jam pans and bake our bread. Sandpits is nestled in the heart of the historic village Curry Rivel, on the Somerset Levels.

Absolutely brilliant experience. I learnt so many interesting things about bread making. I loved being hands on making the breads, bakewell tart, jam and lemon curd and then enjoying eating it afterwards! The hosts were lovely and friendly and they enjoyed answering our many questions! Definitely recommend this experiment!

DO IT !!!! Myself and partner (who bakes cakes) had a fantastic time hosted by Miranda and Carol. They were both very kind, knowledgeable, patient and helpful. Miranda took the time to find out in advance if there was anything specific we wished to make (my parter asked to make Focaccia) and took time out to make the necessary preparations to accommodate this. During the course amongst other things we made Focaccia, Bagels, Baguettes, Cheese and Chive Scones, Apple and Pecan bread and two types of Curdes. We left laden with bread, feeling rather full after a lovely lunch and full of enthusiasm clutching our take away recipes to do more. We highly recommend the course and both Miranda and Carol who are excellent tutors.

We loved our bread baking and jam making course with Miranda and Carol. I still can't believe how many different things we got to make, from bagels to loaves to baguettes, crumble bars, focaccia, and jams and chutneys. We've left with enough treats to keep us going for days. Learnt the ropes when it comes to making bread and Miranda and Carol explain everything really well. It's taught in a very cosy heating showroom and we enjoyed a delicious lunch on the big chef's table. The pub over the road is great for a cocktail afterwards too. Would thoroughly recommend this experience.

We had a wonderful and learnt many new skills. Our hosts were friendly and accommodating and we left with lots of delicious treats to take home.
